J-15 carrier fighter thread

Re: PLAN's first Carrier Strike Fighter the J-15 Flying shark

I don't know why some people are calling the Su-33 airframe old. It's extremely maneuverable, good range and payload. Updated with modern avionics, weapon suites, radar, material, construction methods and uprated engines...I don't see why the Su-33/J-15 isn't capable. The only decent aircraft operating of carriers at the moment are the Rafale and F-18E/F, the J-15 can hold its own very well. And even when the F-35 enters service, I really have my doubts about it, it feels like its abilities are overhyped.

J15 shouldnt even be compared to F18 E/F and JSF, cus for its own indigenous carriers China is working on J16 or J19 whichever its called which will inco-operate technology from J10 and J20, 5th generation naval fighter, obviously J15 is a learning curve and expereince making step for China before eventaully fielding its own 5th gen carrier fighter, thats why China didnt even use naval version of J10, they want something more advanced cus they knew J20 is in the pipeline back in 2003 when none of us didnt

I think the misconception here is that China's naval airforce is out there to face the USN and the USN only. This is not a correct assessment. Most of the countries that China could enter potential conflicts with in East, South, and South East Asia don't operate carriers and many only have 3rd and limited numbers of 4th generation jets. We've all seen the advantages the J-10A, a third gen with up to date avionics, had against the older Su-27s in the Chinese airforce. There is no reason why the J-15, which by all account fit the description of a 4.5 gen jet, shouldn't have an advantage over most of China's adversaries.

People would put that out because all the other nations that China would face are aligned with US, thus very likely they'd have their tail between their legs and beg for US intervention at the first spark of trouble, and China will have first to face the USAF and USN right off the bet.

No telling how'd US react when such time comes, but right now the "hottest" spot is the South, with Vietnam and Philippines. Philippines is too feeble to be counted, that'd leave Vietnam but their problem will not just from the sea, but from their north.

But in the end, J-15 is still years away from reaching significant number in service, even now J-10 have yet reach majority in numbers, the bulk is still with the crappy old junk such as J-7/8 and Q-5.

Lots of SU-27s, SU-30s, and J-11 available...all of which can reach out into the South China Sea. And in such a scenario, I would not consider the JH-7 junk at all.

Those aircraft will have to be taken into consideration by anyone thinking of such a conflict until the J-15s come along.

JH-7 may have limited air to air capabilities when compared to the Su-30MKK and MK2 but it is a potent strike platform. It also has the benefit of low cost and up till the recent mass introduction of WS-10 on J-11Bs, one of the few modern planes in the PLAAF arsenal that is 100% domestically manufactured.

@usaf, Chinese fighters definitely do have black radomes (J-10, J-11B). It's almost standard.

@Jeff, I don't think those are PSed (I think the guy who took these photos were later arrested and given a warning by the authorities, so they should be pretty genuine), though I am interested in the J-11BSH with the blue numberings.
