The above #121 photo was published on the PLA News. According to the story, the pilot Cao Xian Jian was crashed and seriously injured during a routine training from CV-16 on 2016/04/06. After 419 days and multiple surgeries, he was qualified as the J-15 pilot again on 2017/05/30.
(didn't mention which J-15 was lost then)

correct: the "routine training" wasn't from CV-16, rather a base around Bohai (Bo Sea), but it appear the plane lost was indeed a J-15.

Yep, that's why the Advance Hornet carries a porta-potty under the cockpit! Yes, Naval Aviation operating aboard ship is extremely dangerous, and in order to "come aboard ship" you've got to develop a high enough sink rate to catch those wires on the approach end of the ship.
So you're basically throttled back slightly behind the power curve, and those seconds to "spool up" those turbines take forever, and night ops off the carrier are a "hell all their own",,,, possible, but very narrow margins, and none for error!

Have we seen a "new" #117 which was confirmed lost last year?
