A sad loss for China and a further shame that he couldn't see tomorrow, his birthday, which he changed to the date of the J-10's first flight. However, we can rejoice in his contentment with his accomplishments. As he said in numerous interviews, 他这辈子值了. RIP

I don't think anyone knows at this stage -- but either way it appears to be the first photo we have of a J-10A with a WS-10 engine.

Those were LRIP birds that were used primarily for testing. They were never assigned to an operational fighter unit afaik, and are still at the CFTC.

As such, it would make sense to use them as test beds for WS10A/B integration on early J10As.

The AL31 has a short lifespan, so it would make sense that the Chinese are not just looking into installing WS10s on future new build J10B/Cs, but also working on retrofitting WS10A/Bs on existing J10As when their AL31s run out of hours, which could easily be done as a comprehensive MLU. When they also fit those birds with new radars and avionics as well while they are at it.

It would be interesting to see if any of those LRIP J10As also get new canted radomes and IRSTs added later.
