I don’t think the wings are different. It’s just hard to see the curvature at the wing root because of how grainy the photo is.

According to one video on youtube, the J-10D has straight wings instead of the seagull wings of the original J-10, which will reduce lift and drag but increases max speed.

Are we sure this is a J-10D prototype/demonstrator? As far as I can gather, this is nothing more than speculation at this point. Assuming the photo is genuine, it could simply be a testbed. This isn't the first time an existing airframe had been re-purposed to verify technologies and equipment destined for an entirely different platform.

Well Shilao and Yankee's position last night was "yes it's a real photo, yes we may know something about it, no we are definitely allowed to talk about it so we're just going to use the remaining air time to make memes about it." They did spend some time pointing out that this thing is engines with Al-31 and not WS-10.

Their meme answers were:

• this is J-10CR, for export to Russia. Hence why it's using Al-31 engine because Russians want it to have their own engine
• this is J-10CI, for export to Iran. Iran being used to flying heavy fighters like F-14 would like something meatier with more range hence the increased bulk

Not implausible, but (very) far fetched. Why use a Russian engine when the Chinese one is available?

It's ludicrous to see Gen4+ jet fighters still use something as obsolete as unguided rocket pods.

Maybe legacy training for back when they don't have attack helicopters and it's even more dangerous to use J-8s for the role

Woah the enthusiasm to analyze is good but those are posed by Yankee & Shilao and in turn by the OP as memes, they’re not really supposed to be valid and plausible answers.

You forgot their second meme

J-10CR=FC-20CR=FC-(9+2+9)CR=CF CR-929, C for Cheng & F for Fei (aviation)=CAC CR-929, so the photo is sending a message that CR-929 project will be transferred from Comac to Chengdu.

...should have minimal impact on raw airframe performance beyond the added weight (which could/should be offset by uprated engine upgrade).

Wing Loading would still go up, since thrust isn't part of that equation.

However, lower agility is a valid sacrifice these days.
