J-10 Thread IV

I don't think they plan on putting TVNs on production model J-10s. The J-10B used for TVN testing is obviously a tech demonstrator for future J-20 (J-20B/C) variants.

If they intended to just test the engine a Su-27 derived platform or a J-20 proper i.e. a dual engine aircraft would have made more sense. Just like the Russians are testing the Izdeliye-30 engine on a PAK-FA. I would not be surprised if they actually mean to use this engine in a future version of the J-10 as well.

Pretty sure the TVC engine testing isn’t for the engine itself but to the develop the flight controls, in which case it makes far more sense to use a J-10 than a Su-27.

A few more high-resolution images of the TVC nozzle...

Butt wouldn't that mean it's better to test it on a Su-27 and J-20 if the TVC is meant to those type of fighters? Wouldn't it be easier to test FCS for the planes the engine is meant for? This indicates it is indeed either also for J-10 or they want to evaluate TVC for J-10.

But we haven't seen one yet where it is deflected during flight. Might be saving it for the show.

No. What matters here is the aerodynamic configuration. The J-20 and J-11 operate with very different flight control laws. The J-10 and J-20 operate with much more similar flight control laws (in fact since they share a lineage with one another the J-20’s flight control laws are probably derived from the J-10’s). You wouldn’t want to jump straight into sticking a TVC engine into the J-20 to develop the FCS for TVC if your TVC FCS is still immature. There’s always a risk that you can lose control of the plane in the process of testing, and a J-20 airframe is probably too costly and valuable to lose haphazardly right now. That said, if the cartoons we’ve been getting are correct they have already stuck a TVC engine into a J-20, but if that cartoon was true it’s notable that they only stuck one engine in there.

Giving J-10s, future production variants, TVNs would give PLAAF an edge. I wonder whether there is a direct effect (if applicable) on having CTF fitted J-10s with TVN engines?

Also, given that the TVN engine has come on the scene, would this not be an indication that the Chinese engine design institutes have managed to breakthrough the "engine design proficiency" glass ceiling and have the ability to produce world class engines for its aircraft?
