J-10 Thread IV

I think we can consider the J-10TVC something like F-16MATV/X-31 hybrid, considering China has never actually fit TVC on a real plane before, it is reasonable for a iterative developing method: J-20 for WS-10X, J-10 for WS-10TVC, when time is up we can see a J-20 with WS-15TVC.
And of course TVC is valuable for J-20, but not for some super maneuverability at subsonic; the real value is TVC can improve maneuverability at super sonic, which can make the canard hold steady, and that can make J-20 remain stealth; and of course have more control at super sonic.

What's the point of Type-222? Pretty sure a keen-eyed pilot could see as far as 10km.

A bit late, but: accurate measurement of range and relative speed for missile firing envelope and gunnery lead computations. Finding the target is only half the story!

About the original chart (OT): do Chinese Su-30s really have the planar slot array Zhuk-MS rather than advanced versions of the twist-cassegrain N001V?

From Henri K blog with nozzle schematic
At first glance, the three-dimensional vector thrust nozzle installed on a J-10C flying test bench can tilt about 20 °, its shape resembles that of a prototype tested since 2012. The lower part of the drift has has been modified to support pivoting.

Interesting... matches Pratt's PYBBN approach also adopted by Salyut (maybe they lent a hand - they are China's AL-31F supplier, right?).

What does the drawing say about the flower-shaped device in the centre of the nozzle throat? Novel afterburner flame holder (though it's too far aft for that really and I don't see how it would solve the cooling issues encountered on modern engines any better than the traditional ring flame holders, as opposed to the radial design pioneered by the RD-33 and adopted on newer Western engines) or radar blocker?

Isn't this the first convergent/divergent nozzle on a Chinese engine to be fitted into an aircraft? As the drawing shows, it provides for independent throat and exit area control just like PYBBN - nice!

Right, this is a "fixed" "compressor, flow accelerator",, its purpose is #1. to increase the velocity of the flow, by decreasing volume, and #2.to drive/compress that "accelerated flow" outward against the directional petals in order to increase effectiveness of the OVT nozzle!

Long time ago (maybe before 2000) China tested TVC nozzles similar to the one in the F-16 MATV (attached below). But looks like they have adopted Salut's approach. flateric sometime back mentioned CAC officials were making frequent visits to Salut and were quite interested in their 3D-TVC version.

Wonder why the change? Is the Salut implementation lighter than the AVEN on the F-16 MATV?

Via weibo:

2017年12月25下午3时许,某机型试飞成功。点火,滑跑,起飞,降落,表现均良好。真是让人惊喜的圣诞礼物!
December 25, 2017 around 3:00 pm, a certain plane's test flight successful. Ignition, taxing, takeoff, landing, the performance is good. Really amazing Christmas gift!

He also wrote a poem for the first flight, is there anybody who can take a try to translate it?
疾风掠过劲草偏,
猛龙长啸直上天。
只待几番寒彻骨,
鳞爪劲舞推狼烟。

The direct translation doesn't really make much sense in the English context due to differences in culture, grammar, etc., but I'll make an attempt.

Strong winds swept over nodding grass.
The fierce dragon ascends the heaven with a roar.
It waits for several years when the cold chills the bones,
when it pushes the war clouds with dancing scales and claws.
