The photos of the J10 dropping LGBs shows that it was not carrying a targeting pod, and having seen the video of the exercise, it doesn't look like there was another bird doing buddy targeting.
While I am not familiar with this model, the high gauge power cable running into the backs of these devices would suggest strongly to me that these are land based laser designators and this guy is painting the targets for the J10's LGBs.
Looks like it simply collapsed on the spot.
