cat shot from carrier put extreme force on the fornt landing gear, and landing is often termed "control crash landing". You need to have very strong landing gear not to cause damage to your aircraft.

Airforce planes do not have to face these and their landing gears are designed as simple and light weight. Why add extra weights which hampers your fuel and weapon loads?

Aircrafts for navy and later adopted by airforce like F-4 retained much of the navalised features though, they even have arrester hook.

Simple solution means better engineering. ... ... The aim when designing is to make it simple. Good enigneers don't sit and try to produce complex solutions/products. I idea is to make it cheaper and easier to produce and maintain and therefore reliable.

I am comparing the landing gear of the J-10 and Rafael.
The J-10 landing gear looks way too simple.
Do you think this is reflective the overall industrial capibility and sophistication of the J-10 is not at the level of the western counterparts?

And Why the Rafel has that green light hud glowing like the F-22, and the J-10 doesn't?
lol
you sure know what you are talking about

I don't think anyone has said this yet, but on Huitong's page it says that apparently the J-10 has been chosen for the August 1st PLAAF aerobatic team...

If this is true, I'm definitely really happy for them so they have a fighter comparable to current American aerobatic team's planes - but isn't it a bit of a waste to produce precious J-10's for an aerobatic team when the PLAAF itself doesn't have such an impressive force for themselves yet? :(
On that matter, how is J-10 production going lately anyway?

Yes, in November, Chinese Air Force 60 Anniversary, J-10's will be the new planes for the August 1 aerobatic team.

It is a bit of a waste, but the risk of war between the straits has dimished greatly in the last year or so, and the PLAAF already have a pretty sizeable modern fighter fleet in the form of J11s and J10s, so they can probably spare it.

Does anyone know how the pilots for the Aug 1st are selected and how long their tours of durty are in the team? If the pilots are rotated on a regular basis, then it can be seen as a form of investment in training since I doubt the line pilots will be pushing their jets as intensively as the aerobatics teams. Pilots who flew the J10 with the Aug 1st might well go back to their units and be able to teach their fellows a new trick or two.

Its exciting if this proves true as the Aug 1st team should really put the J10 through its paces and we will get a far better idea of just how capable this bird is.

Don't underestimate the power of propaganda. just like how "Top Gun" got young Americans fired up on being fighter pilots, more young Chinese will also be more eager to join the PLAAF once they see the fancy flying by J-10 pilots. The larger the pool, the more the talents they will find.

I have a question about the J-10's weapon payload.

Two similar fighters, the F-16C and J-10 both have similar dimensions (i.e: max take off weights, empty weights, and engine thrust), but the F-16's payload is 7700Kg, while the J-10's is 4500Kg. Why is there such a big difference in payload while they have relatively similar proportions to each other?

(I got these numbers from wikipedia btw. I suppose the real question I'm asking is is anyone knows the real payload of the J-10, or if 4500Kg is the real payload)
