Think about what costs more time and money. A new parachute, or frequent checks for mechanical failure, and then the need to replace parts.

G-forces must to be about same level in either case so I don't see any excessive need to check components when not using parachute. Althought one have to pack new parachute every time before take-off while canard-braking plane can go straight to new take-off if needed. I must admit that I don't know if one can save money, wear and tear either way or is it just a way one do things.

Well, there are more parts on the wings that can also slow down the landing aircraft. With J-20, the verticle stabilizers also serve as brakes. But I agree with latenlazy that using braking chutes is to preserve parts that are more difficult to maintain or more expensive to replace (e.g. braking pads, tires, landing gear as a whole, etc.).

What I can't figure out is the things on top of the truck (it's a pickup truck, isn't it?): A yellow bucket and a mop with a white stick?
