I have a question, why does chinese fighter jets keep mounting deceleration parachute. Is tirebreak not enough to stop the plane before the end of runway? seem to be an aweful waste of space on a fighter. I can't recall seeing those in western planes.

My guess is that it reduces the mechanical strain of parts, resulting in cheaper maintenance over time.

However, J-10 has canards to slow speed after landing and parachute mechanism needs maintenance too. Including packing new parachute after every landing. I haven't seen JAS-39 needing parachute and JAS-39 is meant to operate from highway bases.

Think about what costs more time and money. A new parachute, or frequent checks for mechanical failure, and then the need to replace parts.
