I think the only aircraft that J-20 would come into dogfight range would be other stealth fighters. As such maneuverability still needs to be stressed unless you want to take on the like of F-22 with 4th gen planes in within visual range.

well once ur in WVR theres no advantage of stealth anymore

That's why I assumed that both aircraft have stealth. They can only engage each other when the stealth element is taken away from both, ie in the near BVR or WVR.

Expecting 4th gen planes to take on 5th gen planes in WVR is not a safe assumption because 5th gen planes can take the leasure to engage 4th gen planes at BVR whereas 4th gen planes would have trouble finding 5th gen.

If size is the reason why planes should not focus on maneuverability because they can rely on BVR engagement, then aircrafts like the flankers would have even more reasons to drop the maneuverability requirement compared to stealth planes like the J-20

Big planes would have their own advantages. I think J-10 won out in this case due to better aerodynamic designs. But if it was a J-10 against a J-10 layout-like twin powerful engined plane the size of flankers, I think I would bet on the latter.

Solid gold or 22k gold will be fantastic.. Haha...

Didn't J-11B avionics suppose to be on par with J-10A or better? How come they still got beaten badly.. Unless J-10 aerodynamic is ready a few step above basic flanker air frame.

I'm guessing the competition was purely short range, which would neutralize the J-11B's AESA advantage.

Honestly I still take off the rumours in regard to an AESA on the J-11B as more than a fan-boys dream, an unsubstantial rumor ... nothing more, especially since we haven't seen any changes to the J-11B's radome, no canted radar installation (not that this has to be !) ... they are simply flying with their standard radar.

This was reported more than once, both in Western media and by a PLAAF official named Lei Qiang, who happened to be the same guy who leaked the J-10A. And there was a recent exhibition in which this was reiterated. I wouldn't be surprised if these were not equipped with it now, but I certainly expect them to be in the near future.

Regardless, until we have something more solid we shouldn't assume J-11Bs are equipped with AESA...

in fact we don't even know what kind of radar it features; huitong says its original one is an indigenous pd but there's no photos of it as well

Somethign more solid doesn't have to be pictures.

There may well be some J-11Bs equipped with AESA or testing it, but at this point we have no reason to believe it's in mass service, and for the purposes of discussion we shouldn't assume that is case.
