It looks closer to a PESA, specifically, the Irbis-E.

It's hard to tell the difference between a PESA and AESA radar from a distance, but the modules are bigger on AESA, as they are both transmit and receive. Consequently, and when you compare it to pictures of Irbis-E, it seems to be a PESA.

It's a bit much to say that radar on the J-10B is PESA because it looks like one when, from the distance this photo was taken at it would be near impoossible to differentiate between the two...

Anyway huitong just linked to the picture of the J-10B showing its radar as the AESA, so people will make of that what they will.

That's a flawed argument.

You yourself admitted that it is diffcult (if not impossible I may add) to tell PESA and AESA apart from a distance. And from such distance, it is also impossible to distinguish individual elements on an ESA. You premise is thus flawed, and therefore cannot support your conclusion. And as far as look goes, this radar on the J-10b looks like APG-77, right down to the shape. So by your logic, either the radar on J-10b is an AESA or APG-77 is a PESA.

But appearance is meaningless. Like siegecrossbow said, China hardly put any effort into PESA research and simply went straight into AESA. The ESA radars that have deployed so far are AESA. I would venture to say that China cannot build a PESA. This radar on the J-10b would not be anything else but an AESA.

The same old predictable nonsense.

Every time China makes a new breakthrough, the same crowd first tries to deny it's existence, and then when even they cannot suspend reality enough to believe it, they suggest it's Russian or made with Russian parts or Russian help, and will probably try and throw some cheapshot in questioning the quality of the product. If all else fails, they will then try to to dismiss its significance by suggesting the Chinese do not have the experience or training to make full use of it.

China's J-11B and J-15 Flying Shark will both have AESA

[During an interview in July of last year, a Chinese military official stated that the J-11B and J-15 Flying Shark will be equipped with AESA radars. Therefore, a year later, it is not a surprise to see an AESA radar on a J-10B.]

According to a Chinese military official, both the J-11B and J-15 Flying Shark will be fitted with AESA.

Man this "definition of certain types of people" is so accurate...

I am going to show these exact words to those I met at other forums, next time.
