CCTV - PLAAF's "Top Gun" training?

Chinese state television has been accused of broadcasting a clip from the film "Top Gun" and claiming it was from a real air force exercise.

The footage broadcast by China Central Television was said to show a Chinese J-10 fighter plane firing a missile during manoeuvres and destroying another aircraft.

But film buffs noticed distinct similarities to an aerial combat scene from the Hollywood blockbuster, in which Tom Cruise plays a maverick airman at an elite school for US Naval aviators.

The image of the targeted aircraft exploding looked identical to an explosion towards the end of Top Gun, when Cruise's character hits a Russian plane with a missile.

The footage, which has been taken down from the CCTV website, will prove an embarrassment for the state broadcaster.

In a previous case in 2007, China's state-run Xinhua news agency issued a news story about a discovery related to multiple sclerosis, which was accompanied by an X-ray showing the head of cartoon character Homer Simpson.

Was it necessary to put my light-hearted comment in this thread? It was more about CCTV than the J-10. And I can see a reply in the members section but not my original post.

I saw a video comparing the clips on WSJ, and it seems to me that it's just CCTV using clips for effect again.

However, truth is, China's reputation among the average person for cheapness or fakery is so great that trying to explain that at least in this case China deserves the benefit of the doubt will either be futile, or lead directly into another question, which is, "Why not just use real footage?" And I think that's a fair question.

They do this all the time for other elements of their shows too, like using music from games and movies, and I find it amusing. I've seen the same done on western shows too.

They did use real images. The target destroyed at the end of the video was real.

Re: CCTV - PLAAF's "Top Gun" training?

I've been reading on some conservative blogs spinning it to say China was saying they had the best air force in the world. Just because one split sec shot of the F-5 exploding? How does that equate to declaring themselves the best in the world? Maybe they think this is propaganda saying that Chinese fighters beat US fighters and that's what's offending them. I wouldn't be surprised since I read an article from a news journalist I've seen on national TV angered that the Beijing government is hiding to the Chinese people that the US elected a black man as President. That's a lie. And that journalist was a notorious liberal. This only shows CCTV is still amateur when it comes to reporting the news. And let's not forget this isn't only done in China. Remember the manipulated pictures coming out of the Israeli-Lebanon conflict several years ago? Or how about Taiwanese news using those animations to depict what they said happened in the news. I've seen some US journalists irate over those animations as if what's shown is the truth. And what about the movie production still from a Michelle Yeoh movie where they used PLA soldiers to play monks showing them taking Tibetan clothing and that was used to say China was behind the 2008 Tibet riots by disguising themselves as monks and blaming the Tibetans for the violence? Those are worse than just showing a split second shot from Top Gun. I'm afraid they're just hurting over the J-20 shocker still.

I find it curious that Georgian officials seem to be present as well... Wonder what the repercussion would be with Russia if they decided to buy the plane.

I believed J-10 has already achieved full domestic product. Even the AL-31FN we seen might be domestic producte too. There is no stopping from China to export J-10 to whoever wants to buy it.

The only thing that will stop it will be political reason. Seriously I don't think China will sell J-10 to georgia but the fact Chinese official demonstrated their plane to foreign delegates with intention to export their product shows they have no problem exporting the whole plane including the engines to whoever wants to buy it.
