That is not necessarily the case. I think the previous engine malfunctioning incident (when the Chinese pilot glided the J-10 to safety) was using the WS-10 engine instead of the AL-31FN. The WS-10 failure also resulted in a J-11 crash a while back.
That conflicts with the news we've been hearing that the WS-10 isn't even implemented in the J-10 right now though.
