There you have it. Hezbollah defeats the US once more. The IDF will withdraw their forces from Lebanon and things will be back to where they were. Non of their military objectives were accomplished. The agreement text is just to save the US from humiliation so they can go back to their CUFI lunatics and tell them "We did it! We beat the Ayatollahs and the Jihadis and Jesus will return very soon to take us all to heaven"

Israel – Hezbollah Ceasefire Agreement Terms, a Return to the Status-Quo before October 7th 2023:

– Hezbollah and all other armed groups in Lebanon will not carry out any offensive actions against Israel.

– Israel will not carry out any offensive action against targets inside Lebanon, including on the ground, in the air and at sea.

– Israel and Lebanon 'recognize the importance' of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

– Israel and Lebanon reserve the right to exercise their inherent right of self-defense.

– The Lebanese Armed Forces and the Lebanese Security Forces will be the only armed groups 'authorized to carry weapons or operate forces' in southern Lebanon. (This will not be implemented, it is a part of UNSCR 1701 and was never implemented to begin with.)

– The sale, supply and production of any weapons or materials related to weapons to Lebanon will be under the supervision and control of the Lebanese state. (Won't be implemented, this is a formality.)

– All unauthorized facilities involved in the production of weapons and weapons-related materials will be dismantled. (Won't be implemented, this is a formality.)

– All military infrastructure and positions will be dismantled, all unauthorized weapons that do not comply with these obligations will be confiscated (Won't be implemented, this is a formality).

– A committee will be established that will be acceptable to Israel and Lebanon that will monitor and assist in ensuring the enforcement of these commitments.

– Israel and Lebanon will report any possible violation of the commitments to the committee and UNIFIL.

– Lebanon will deploy its official military and security forces along all borders, crossing points and the line that defines the southern region.

– Israel will withdraw all its forces in a phased manner towards south of the blue line during a period of up to 60 days.

– The US will promote indirect negotiations between Israel and Lebanon to reach a recognized land border.

I don't see why Hezbollah would agree to these terms. They are obviously nowhere near defeated or weakened militarily. Their strikes are increasing in intensity and the areas they target keep expanding in size.

More or less a formality as the previous time. No one should have any expectations that Hezbollah is going to withdraw. Israel got their butts whooped. Failed to militarily defeat Hezbollah, capture any major areas, and to cripple Hezbollah missile/rocket platforms.

There is no one who can force Hezbollah out if they continue to stay short of a US invasion. The Americans/West is pressuring for a ceasefire, Israel is looking for a way out, and Hezbollah doesn’t want to be blamed for rejecting the ceasefire.

Hezbollah fighters will leave their positions in southern Lebanon to move north of the Litani River, which runs about 30 kilometres (20 miles) north of the border with Israel.
Their withdrawal will not be public, the senior Lebanese political source said. He said the group's military facilities "will be dismantled" but it was not immediately clear whether the group would take them apart itself, or whether the fighters would take their weapons with them as they withdrew.
The Lebanese army would deploy troops to south of the Litani to have around 5,000 soldiers there, including at 33 posts along the border with Israel, a Lebanese security source told Reuters.

There are 3 main reasons for a ceasefire in Lebanon, Netanyahu says

  • “Focus on the Iranian threat”: The prime minister cited this first reason and added that he would not expand on it. Hezbollah is an Iran-backed militant group in Lebanon.
  • For the military: A second reason, he said, was to “give our forces a breather and replenish stocks.”
  • “Separate the fronts”: Third, he cited Israel’s war in Gaza. “Hamas was counting on Hezbollah to fight by its side. With Hezbollah out of the picture, Hamas is left on its own. We will increase our pressure on Hamas and that will help” release the hostages still in the enclave, he said.

Another important thing to mention is that this agreement only lasts for 60 days. Which is 5 days after Trump is inaugurated. Don’t be too optimistic about the longevity of the agreement since it is ultimately a return back to the previous status quo. If anyone expected Hezbollah to disappear then Netanyahu would have mentioned it on his public statement.

It is in a sense a tactical victory for Israel, because while the invasion of Lebanon failed, it frees them up to fight in Gaza.

Then again, 1+ years of high intensity fighting, 10 000s losses, just to take a Grozny sized city is an awful performance for a coalition of some of the largest militaries in the world.

If the agreement is actually implemented then I fail to see this as anything other than comprehensive Israeli strategic victory. Middle East Spectator believes that Hezbollah will not withdraw north of Litani but I am not so sure. They have been unusually quiet throughout the entire process.

There's no reason to withdraw north and stay there because the Israelis themselves has revealed they to want to withdraw.
So Hezbollah returning after (or even during) the ceasefire is most likely. What's the deterrent?

The idea that Hezbollah is on the brink and desperate to save themselves from total annihilation is of course, the framing that's being pushed. But doesn't match the facts on the ground.

As of now, Israel is only <20% of the way advancing to the Litani river.
So no, they don't even have the leverage yet to show they can force the outcome when the ceasefire breaks.

Underground Hezbollah bases and Hezbollah fighters that live as civilians in the villages south of the litani river won't disappear. It's not like these are fighters from Beirut who have been posted to the south, they are the people of south Lebanon. So they won't disappear.

Hezbollah and all other armed groups in Lebanon will not carry out any offensive actions against Israel.

Israel invaded Lebanon primarily to halt the solidarity attacks on northern Israel. If the above condition is complied with, then Israel has achieved strategic victory. The settlers will return to their homes in the north, the economic damage from displacement will reduce, and the military will be able to focus entirely on Gaza and the West Bank.

This agreement, signed as it is, cannot be seen as a strategic victory for Israel. Anyone who sees it that way is deluded. It was just a mere formality and a return to the status quo; Israel gained nothing except for forcing Hezbollah out of Israel's fight against Gaza.
