ISIS/ISIL conflict in Syria/Iraq (No OpEd, No Politics)

now in Russian Internet I saw something what I was not going to post about, but I will after this:
The pilot ejected safely but end up getting killed by the rebel forces when he parachuted down. That means whomever killed that pilot had already violated Geneva convention on warfare and treatment of captured P.O.W.
pictures purports to show the pilot spent most of the ammo of his (now according to my untrained eye)

meaning he fought back ... in the end, he used a hand grenade ... not to be taken alive

reportedly there're pictures revealing his identity available, too, but since

is involved, I think we should leave it

since then Russian aviation has been working on that area if you know what I mean

Do Russian aircrew carry hand grenades as standard issue? Seems like a bit of an unusual item to be found in a pilot’s survival kit.

interestingly, now the Kremlin asked Turkey for help with recovering the wreckage of the downed aircraft: the link is РИА

the same link basically confirms:

actually later I watched a short footage which purported to show the end of his fight: Insurgents were gathering around what looked just like a hump (not a hill),
and were engaged in a gun fight at a very close range (30? meters), and then an explosion was heard and some of them ducked; the camera operator then left (I sure wouldn't have been interested in seeing the rest even if it had been available)

in the meantime the pilot has been officially identified as Roman Filipov, the rank of Major; he will be awarded

in memoriam
(I skip the info about his family etc.)

I have done what I can too look into Russian Military escape kits, I don't think it's an Official standard issue. however the Russian RGN, RGO and RGD 5 handgrenades are fairly small, not the smallest I think the old V40 holds that distinction

the size of a gulf or ping pong ball

On my screen this is about real sized. Something like this could easily be stashed in a pocket like those on Pilot survival vest. along with this the Russian pilots carry a Stechkin APS machine pistol in the Lack luster 9x18 PM Makarov they date back to the 1950's. The Russians have some better and more modern subguns that could fill the role. Fires in either semi auto or full auto from a 20 round magazine.
