Many local fighters surrendered and stayed in their town or village that was then not occupied but defended in future by the same fighters while those of their colleagues that didn't want to stay were taken by bus to Idlib or some other "opposition" area. It was described in am article in The "Independent" by a British journalist whose name I just now can't remember but I think I copied it to this thread. I'll look for it.
Found him. You find the article on this site:

the strategy of Government against the remaining part of Aleppo has been to carve it, from south direction, I quickly created this:
DyEnq.jpg

the solid lines approximately mark area(s) of contact in residential districts, and the dotted line is even more approximate as it goes through less inhabited parts (some could be parks (?)) and can move quickly without actually meaning much (strategically) ... now I'll wait

(to put this down, I used the most recent "peto lucem"

If the more natural terrain represents parks etc more "open" areas then it appears rebel territory is naturally split into thirds going from SW to NE. Wouldn't it make sense for government forces to attack the middle segment and create the need for rebels to transit the "open" areas subject to bombardment and upon victory also split what's left of rebel territory in two? Though this may require more government forces than if they just keep tightening the noose and keep rebel territory contiguous.

Now
Turkey’s military operation in Syria is not against any country or person but terror groups in general, President

has said, in contrast to earlier remarks that Turkey’s objective was to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad following.

and earlier
On Nov. 29, Erdoğan sought to explain the reason for Ankara’s military offensive into Syria, saying: “We entered there to end the rule of the tyrant al-Assad who terrorizes with state terror. [We didn’t enter] for any other reason.”

Erdoğan’s remarks on Nov. 29 created unease in Moscow, as senior officials publicly criticized the Turkish government and expressed their demand for an explanation. The issue was also raised by Vladimir Putin, who talked to Erdoğan on the phone on Nov. 30 while the latter was chairing a National Security Council (MGK) meeting.

Replay the whole sequence of events.

Sultan:cool:: I am there to beat Assad.
Putino_O: What did you just say?
Sultan:oops:: Oops, (sorry) I forget what time is it now.
Sultan:(: I was saying I am not there to...
Putin:rolleyes:: That sounds about right.
Sultan:p: You know I hate the west, do you.
Sultan (back in his bathroom): I meant what I said, Assad is the terrorist who I am going to fight.
Years later, Erdogan wins the Oscar award for the best actor, just like Obama won the "peace" prize.

The sultan is "funny":D or just a good actor.

... but the thing is Government has been carving also from north-east (where I put question mark below), so here's "the upper part":

... and I've heard now Mosul is encircled (but I don't have time for Iraq, as I repeatedly said)
but now I read in Russian Internet a battalion-sized ISIL unit recently had lifted the siege of Mosul in the west, plus other info about "the progress", so I used google, found what could be a politically correct cover-up of the real results/"results":

Iraq: Death toll climbs as urban warfare slows battle for Mosul

In the BBC Radio 4 Today program Lise Ducet confirmed from West Aleppo that people trying to escape from the rebel area are fired upon by the rebels. The program also mentioned that the rebel area has been reduced to 30% of the area at the begin of the current offensive and that this had enabled thousands of people to escape.

(several fresh maps inside) who sounds cautious, points out the fights have been going on for 25 days and the lines are still fluid, so tactical loss(es) now may quickly have operational consequences (and he refers to both sides) ...
... and Aug 25, 2016 is when the timeline starts below:
