Syria war: Yarmouk camp evacuation 'on hold'
The expected evacuation of thousands of rebels from in and around Yarmouk refugee camp in southern Damascus has been put on hold, reports say.

Safety issues and the killing of a top rebel have been blamed for the delay.

Militants and their families were due to be bussed to areas under the control of their respective groups, under a deal between rebels and the government.

About 18,000 civilians have been trapped in Yarmouk by the fighting and a government siege since 2012.

Islamic State (IS) militants took over parts of the camp earlier this year.

They were pushed back by Palestinian militias and Syrian rebels after weeks of fierce fighting, and Yarmouk has since been divided into areas controlled by IS, the rival al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front, and pro- and anti-government Palestinian militants.

Government forces maintain checkpoints around the area preventing civilians from leaving.

Safe passage
Under the deal, fighters will withdraw from Yarmouk and the neighbouring districts of Hajar al-Aswad and al-Qadam.

Eighteen buses which will transport rebels and their families were reported to have arrived at the camp on Friday.

However, Lebanese Hezbollah al-Manar TV said the evacuation was held up because the convoy was due to pass through territory controlled by rebel group Jaysh al-Islam, whose

in an air strike later that day.

The UK-based monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said it was paused for "logistic reasons" in order to secure the road to IS-held Raqqa in the north-east.

The plan would see IS fighters and their families given safe passage there, and al-Nusra militants transferred to the northern province of Idlib.

Once Yarmouk is made safe, the UN will be able to get aid to the civilians who have been trapped.

Yarmouk was first built for Palestinians fleeing the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. Before the Syrian civil war began in 2011, it had more than 150,000 refugees living there.

Those trapped in the camp for the past two years, including 3,500 children, have no access to regular food supplies, clean water or healthcare.
So not only the Daesh fighters but also those of Al Qaeda are to be evacuated, making Damascus a lot safer. Is it now only Jaysh al-Islam that remains to be destroyed?

A good tactic on the government side, eliminate the "moderate" first to weaken the opposition on the future negotiation table, then finish the radicals on the battle ground, very good practice of devide and defeat, good prioritization.

In a very intriguing development, it seems that SAAF (AF), RuAf, and unspecified Loyalist Forces have beaten YPG and SDF forces to the objective of the Tishrin Dam. Only a week ago, some sources reported that YPG and SDF were on the verge of taking this objective. However, as reported, below, the relationship between SAAF, RuAf, Loyalist Forces, and YPG may be more cooperative than competitive and more complementary than contradictory.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Pro-government forces in Syria, backed up by the country's warplanes, scored another groundbreaking victory and seized control of Tishreen Dam and almost a dozen villages in the nearby regions North of Aleppo province on Saturday afternoon.

Informed sources said minutes ago that the Syrian forces came in full control over the Tishreen Dam on the Euphrates river at the border of Raqqa and Aleppo provinces.

The Syrian forces also took full control over Al-Shelash, Al-Khabr, Bir Shmal, Bir Bakkar, Abd Kileye, Tel Al-Banat, Khashkash Saghir, Khashkhash Kabir and Al-Weisi near the Dam.

Sources also said that Syrian and Russian warplanes still continue massive strikes at ISIL targets near the Dam.

On December 24, The Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) managed to free four villages in the Southern parts of Serin city in Northern Aleppo province and fully purged the ISIL terrorists from the Northeastern parts of the Tishrin dam.

The YPG operations which were carried out on Wednesday night and Thursday morning killed tens of ISIL terrorists and wounded scores of others.

"The YPG forces are 5km away from Tishrin dam itself and they are approaching the dam from the Northeast," a field source said.

The Syrian and Russian warplanes, in a joint operation, pounded the ISIL strongholds near the Tishrin dam on December 23 in preparation for the YPG operation.

"The ISIL's fortified positions near Tishrin Dam, which is over the Euphrates river at the border of Raqqa and Aleppo provinces, came under the joint combat sorties of the Syrian and Russian air forces," military sources said on Wednesday.

"Following the Syrian government forces' plan to carry out an imminent large-scale operation to end the ISIL occupation of the strategic Tishrin dam, the Syrian and Russian fighter jets targeted the headquarters and defense lines of the ISIL terrorists on both sides of the river, which claimed the lives of many militants and destroyed their military infrastructures," the sources said.

"In the meantime, the ISIL's gathering centers in al-Bab, Deir Hafer, Jrouf, Sharbeh, Jubb Ghabsheh in the Northeastern part of Aleppo province were bombed by the Russian and Syrian air fleets," they said.

"There were no immediate reports on the possible casualties of the ISIL terrorists in the airstrikes," the sources pointed out.

Man, the pace of both Loyalist Forces operations and the succession of victories, both tactical and strategic is quite impressive, of late. Cumulative effects, baby; cumulative effects!

This map better contextualizes Tishrin Dam in geographic relation to other recent objectives (I'm a stickler for context-in-depth).

Based on its distance from even the Loyalist Force's easternmost successes in Aleppo Province (the distance from Dayr Hafir is ~75 km), I'm thinking this might have been a Special Forces operation. They sure didn't want this strategic objective to fall in the hands of the competing coalition. And I don't mean ISIL, either!

Or maybe some Syrian or Russian spy were able to infiltrate that rebel group. Other leaders will be bombed in a similar fashion which may help end this civil war sooner than expected.
Seems that you were correct, prescient, even:
Zahran Allouch's Successor Might Be Dead 24 Hours after Appointment as Jeish al-Islam's New Leader

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian Army tracked and stormed the headquarters of the newly-appointed leader of Jeish al-Islam, Essam al-Boudani, in the Eastern part of Damascus province less than 24 hours after the Syrian air force killed the former leader of the terrorist group, Zahran Allouch.

"The hideout of Jeish al-Islam's new commander Essam al-Boudani, also known as Abu Hamam, in Hajjariyeh in Douma was stormed by the Syrian soldiers," military sources said Saturday afternoon.

"The army was informed by the intelligence sources about al-Boudani's hideout this morning," the sources added.

"Scores of the guards of the new commander were killed or wounded in the attack," they said.

"The terrorist group's headquarter has been completely destroyed," the sources said.

The source said that the fate of al-Boudani himself remains unconfirmed.

On Friday, the notorious commander of Jeish al-Islam, Zahran Allouch was confirmed dead after the Syrian fighter jets conducted a powerful airstrike in Eastern Ghouta in Damascus countryside, killing the terrorist leader and several other militant commanders in the attack.

A few hours after the killing of Allouch, Jeish al-Islam commanders held an emergency meeting to elect a new leader, where from among the 12 Jeish al-Islam deputy commanders and Allouch's aides, al-Boudani was appointed for the post.

Both Allouch and al-Boudani are originally from Douma city.

Douma is the most important stronghold of the terrorist group across the country.

Earlier today, sources disclosed that Allouch was hunted as a result of an inside job.

"The Syrian Air Force Intelligence Unit was behind the attack which killed Zahran Allouch and several of his deputies," the sources said.

"One of the intelligence officers that infiltrated Allouch’s network had revealed to the air force the precise location of the militant commanders' meeting that took place in Eastern Ghouta, and this ultimately led to the death of Zahran Allouch and his comrades," the sources said.

"This is not the first time that the Syrian Air Force Intelligence Unit has carried out a spying operation; however, this is by far one of their largest operations during this war," the sources said.

Army Spokesman Ali Mayhoub confirmed on Saturday that Allouch and a number of other commanders of Jeish al-Islam and other terrorist groups, including Al-Rahman and Ahrar al-Sham, were killed in a special operation conducted by the Syrian air force on terrorists’ military positions in Eastern Ghouta.

Allouch was killed when the Syrian fighter jets fired eight rockets at the terrorist group's command center in Al-Marj region of Eastern Ghouta, he said.

Reports also said today that the Syrian army engaged intensified clashes with the Takfiri militants in Damascus province after killing Allouch near the capital.

The clashes erupted in the vicinity of al-Marj area in Eastern Ghouta in Damascus countryside, and left a group of militants killed and injured, sources said.

Senior members of Ahrar Sham's Shura (consultative) Council sent their condolences on the death of Allouch, who was known as the most formidable sworn enemy of President Assad across Southern Syria, as his elimination strikes a lethal blow at Jeish al-Islam and other militant groups in Syria.

Allouch was notorious for his vast ethnic cleansing of Shiites in Syria.

Allouch's death will likely exacerbate terrorists' military problems in Southern Syria, specially in Damascus province.

Hamza Bayrakdar, Spokesman of Jeish al-Islam, and Abdel Nasser Shamir, commander of Al-Rahman terrorist group were also killed in the airstrike in Eastern Ghouta.

Jeish al-Islam is one of the largest terrorist groups in Southern Syria and the biggest one in Eastern Ghouta.

Jeish al-Islam is a Saudi-backed Takfiri terrorist group affiliated to the Islamic Front a conglomerate of tens of terrorist groups fighting against the Syrian government.

If Russian and Syrian aircraft bombarding the takfiri enabled YPG to take the dam it means they have learned to cooperate and that YPG now belongs to the anti-terrorist coalition with with Syria, Iraq, Iran, Russia and Hezbollah. That would be an important political development in line with the recent military achievements.
That must provide valuable protection to YPG from the Turkish airforce.

Are you sure about the Dam being under control of the government? YPG showed its flag this morning on the West side of the dam. Also government forces are like 60km away from it.
That report was incorrect and has been updated. Here's another source!
