While I agree with your sentiment, I think that the Paris attacks could have much more far reaching consequences. France is a member of NATO and a permanent member of the UNSC. The French president has already declared the attacks an "act of war", and by treaty, NATO must respond to that. Ideally, we will see a UN mandate, but at the very least, I think NATO will be taking action.
If the UN goes in, and an understanding is reached with Russia, then all well and good. If otherwise, then we may very well see NATO and Russia operating in the same theatre, and that is going to be a very dangerous situation.
To be honest Solarz, I do not really buy the "Act of War" line as anything other than a placebo for domestic consumption. An Act of War is an act that can only be carried out by a recognised Nation State, so unless Holland has just recognised ISIS as a Nation State, the Paris attacks are and remain an Act of Terror.
Before anyone says "what about 9/11". That only worked because the Taliban were the Afghan Government and they refused to hand over Bin Laden and other Al-Qidea leaders.
Beyond that, terrible as they unquestionably are, I do not see the Paris attacks as other than a footnote to this thread and should really be discussed as part of the European Refugee crisis thread.
Apologies to Janjek for not apparently taking full note and responding to the points he had made.
Sadly we are now reaching the busiest time of my year and as much and very many and highly unreasonable demands of "meat world" must take priority over my Online activities.
I definitely agree that the focus is now for the SAA to retake the rebel held areas South of Aleppo and East of the M5 and this makes Saraquib a next major objective.
Regarding Kweires, I am going to quote from Jura's Daily Star link from a few days ago.
"Kweires airport is not just an air base but an integrated military base and taking control of it will give joint Syrian and Russian forces an advance post from which to launch other operations," the source told AFP.
"The Syrian army is preparing for the start of military operations in areas where clashes have not occurred for three years," he added.
Which is the point I was making about being an intact C&C facility.. The SAA seems busy clearing the environs of ISIS fighters and clearings the mines and other booby traps before going further. I still see a sweep east and North coming to fully secure Aleppo and link up with the other government enclave in the North and East.
The general moves are however more interesting. Russian/Syrian strategy is clearly to defeat the so called pro democratic rebel opposition, to make the Government/ISIS battle the only show in town and to neuter all western criticism. My reading of the upsurge of Western backed actions in Iraq is that this is an attempt to contra the Russian strategy bt forcing ISIS to redeploy much of its strength out of Syria, allowing the rebels to expand into the void and then paint the Russian Intervention as a campaign against the Pro Democratic forces. In short the last throw of the Regime Change dice.
We will see if this dice gambit bears much fruit (where do I get these mixed metaphors from!!?)
Finally, again addressed to Janjek and regarding his medal collection. Did you in your childhood encounter the cartoon characters Dasterdly and Mutley?
