Yup its a rout! The SAA has crossed the M5 and is taking the villages on the other side. Legend on the Map which 4 hours earlier was describing rebel counter attack is now saying "Collapse of rebel defence lines"
I have that late August 2014 feeling again.

Breaking news again Paris under attack CNN and Fox reporting at least 35 possibly as many as 60 dead with hostages some speculation revolves around returning jihadists fighters we all should be praying for the survivors this is not over by any means at all and if it is returning jihadists then we all have good reason to be worried

There is another map out as of 2pm Aleppo time today.

It shows that the Syrian Government has liberated the remaining towns, in the Salient area, East of the M5 and have pushed the fight to a long stretch of the road itself.
Counter attack or not, this is looking more like a very significant breakthrough of rebel prepared defences and an effective rout of forces behind them.

A week ago, someone, here, observed that southwest Aleppo was the most dynamic battle-zone and predicted that, in the nexb strategic stage, this region would be the center of offensive action by Assad Regime Coalition Forces (ARCF). Who was that again? Hmm?

Another medal for Colonel-General-Field Marshall-Commandant Amin? ;)

SampanViking, to answer your question, Abu al-Duhur, where the airbase is located, is actually indicated at the bottom-center of the maps you've recently posted. It's just left (west) of the scale graph. So, it's, very much, in the region that's in play. I gave a detailed and ridiculously self-referential analysis on Tuesday, in post #2193, maps and all. My feelings are hurt that you hadn't read it :(. But, I'm also impressed by your inclination to pass over excessive verbiage.:D

I'll take that as a recommendation to brevity, ... next time!

Btw, there's an informative analysis by ISW which details that Kuweires may have simply been a symbolic victory as ARCF already had a functional airbase in Aleppo, "[...] at the Aleppo International Airport thirty kilometers to the west [...]", of Kuweires. See, here:

. They're quite anti Assad, so they only, grudgingly, updated their battle maps after the siege was lifted and they've hurriedly removed positive ARCF news from their front page.

wOw, indeed! They entered Idlib Privince farther north than I thought they would. Abu al-Duhur Airbase be damned! They might just move on Saraqib, at the intersection of M4 (from Latakia) and M5 (from Damascus, Homs and Hama).

That woulld be major!!!

After 9/11, the UN gave the mandate for the US to go into Afghanistan and topple the Taliban. Will we now see a UN mandate to go into Syria and Iraq? What effect will this have on the Russian operation?
I hope so for as long as Isis exists these attacks will go on probably even worse and more brutal
