I haven't been able to findout what type of sleeping system the pla-airborne, sf or recon units use in the field. Do they use hammocks/tarps or bivys or just a regular one person tent? I have seen photos of regular infantry having 1 person tents in use.

Delusional, unfounded claim.

These arent sold due to nice looking ads, that's something only civilians care about.

PLA inf equipment is rugged, light and functional. That hits the trifecta for use in modern battlefields, hence why both Russia and Ukraine are big customers.

Compare this to heavy US made night vision gear. Looks good for airsofters and colonial policemen, essentially both different types of cosplayers. When you're under artillery and air strikes, you don't want to be wearing 20 kgs of cosplay material.

That's every army besides the Russian and Ukrainian ones. And apparently the armies with combat experience like PLA gear, so right back at you.
Ukraine isn't big customers to China, unless we're counting the DJY drones.

They won't "realize" that because they know a few dozen VLO tactical aircraft or a few hundred BMs they could buy instead of that are infinitely more consequential.

GWOT and the zero casualty policy (because these wars were hard to justify, to start with) Western govts adhered to really distorted people's view on how much investment the infantry should get. The statistics from World War I to the Russian-Ukrainian war are available. Small arms cause very few casualties compared to artillery, air power and AFVs. And most of the time it is the machine guns doing most of the job. Rifle engagement distances are really close. The second figure is for WW2 and it is about the maximum distance men fired at. ~85% reported that they never fired their rifles at ranges greater than 300 yards in daytime offensive action. So I don't see why 3rd gen analog night vision is a must or everyone needs thermals.

russia # china
russia need cut infantry equipment cost to the max because they can't afford overwhelming air superiority
and thousands km of war frontline all of that require huge number of active combat troops

unless china plan to infantry rush taiwan , urban combat 3+ years war of attrition inside taiwan and land war with india at the same time

then they don't need to follow russian footsteps : aka naked non-optic combat rifle , just basic helmet and a vest , no NVGs , no fancy infantry gears to save cost for all the ...big stuff

otherwise maintain an elite well equipped marine corp with fancy gears number around 10.000 . 20.000 or 50.000 seem not unthinkable with china economy and military budget

I’m assuming that commanders are allowing more personal modification of rifles?
Most likely. Personalized modifications isn't that uncommon nowadays given the PLA's recent efforts on actively working with private arms companies / suppliers for specialized loadouts and solutions at every level (a practice we will likely see further expand in the upcoming years).

What's odd is that the entire unit seems to be using western optics (Aimpoint and Vortex), not a situation you would usually associate with the PLA, especially given the many arguably superior (and cheaper) domestic alternatives available.

Likely those optics are from existing stock (i.e. older models than what's available in market from the same brand), might as well burn through them instead of collecting dust in the warehouse.
