Kestrel is iterating fast. A sneak peek at Kestrel's Mars 4.0 smart soldier system, specifically its fusion imaging capabilities (combining low-light and thermal with outline and highlight modes, etc.).

I remember 16 years ago playing Tom Clancy Splinter Cell and telling my friends how cool the headset is being able to switch from night vision to thermals and other modes. We've come a long way.

I remember playing it 20 years ago. Back then the developers asked Tom Clancy about the idea for the games. He told them it was unrealistic. Of course Mr. Clancy was an insurance broker not a specialist in optics. By 2018 it was reality.

Apparently, season 2 of the "Taiwanese ballistic plate scandal" is here lol. Gun& Fun (the same Youtube channel that tested the Taiwanese standard issue plates a few months back), somehow got their hands on a collection of helmets including the Taiwanese EMBH-105 / PASGT copy, American LWH, Russian 6B47, Chinese Type-15 / Type-19, and two other Taiwanese-made commercial products. Making this probably the most complete testing & side-to-side comparison so far.

While this initial video doesn't include any specific data or results, the overall points are pretty clear:
  • The current Taiwanese standard issue helmets (EMBH-105) were tested and built under the heavily outdated 1980 NIJ standard, with no consideration into factors such as structural deformation, resulting in sub par protection and outperformance by even the PASGT helmet copy produced in 1999.
  • Against deformation of 9mm and 7.62×25mm Tokarev shot at 5 meters, Chinese Type-19 fared best alongside the Commercial Hanlin Tactical 3A, with the Type-15 being above average and the Taiwanese EMBH-105 / Russian 6B47 faring among the worst.
  • While all helmets protected against 7.62 x 39mm fragmentation, Taiwanese and Russian issue helmets showed notable signs of deformation.
  • All helmets (including the the Chinese Type-15 / 19) failed to protect against direct impact from 5.56×45mm NATO (standard Taiwanese T-91 rifle) shot at 100 meters.
Original video:

As mentioned by the channel, the complete uncut version of the testing + results would be released later on (just like the previous Taiwanese plate tests), probably something to look forward to.

What sort of information is out there regarding the new tan combat boot they’re all wearing in recent pictures? Any info on the supplier or if they’re on sale on the civilian market? Materials?
