What's the point of using hats instead of helmets?Special forces soldiers wearing rebreathers.
Boonie hats are useful in camoflage since they can disrupt the shape of a person's head and can be adjusted according to the environment the user is in. Helmets don't and can be seen.
They could use something similar to Mitznefet then.
Good point. But those hats look like they can easily get snared in jungles and forests. You got to remember that the Israelis operate in a totally different environment.

On the other side Helmets are heavy and hot, they insulate boonie hats are light and vented. Flexible able to be pocketed.
The Mitznefet also served as a large sunshade. Which when operating in the Negev is a huge bonus.
