Could be, if the heavt shield fell down it would be easier to grab the handle instead of trying to flip it over.

Looks like the selfies are done by either a marine or a Jiaolong commando unit member based on the patch on his left arm. Also the nvg mount looks a lot like the standard ones we have seen among other militaries rather than the new ones we have seen so far.
