Is that a shovel on the ground? If so, it must be a new or relatively new design.

I believe that is an entrenching tool which is basically a short shovel that is easy to carry. If I remember correctly, the old ones have a longer and wooden grip, so this one might be a completely different entrenching tool.

Do they have a detachable handle that screws into the hole at the back of the shovel handle? Would make it quite a bit easier to do some real digging because of the increased leverage.

In the picture there is a hole at the bottom of the tool and after a quick research, entrenching tools can definitely be extended like this one:

that looks like an unexpectedly complex detachable handle... it seems to contain quite a few compact multitools hidden in the center cavity. Do you have any further info on what those multitools might be?
