I am curious why they choose 7.62x39mm Soviet ranther than 5.56x45mm NATO. 556 has better performance and it has been used in INSAS rifle.
7.62 is the better option in the type of engagements India is likely to be facing in Kashmir or Ladakh. Think of the problems the US military had with the M4 in Afghanistan.

A better question is why Indians even bothered with 5.56.

You means after nearly 25 years, with the help from Russia, USA and Europe, they still not able to manufacture qualified 5.56NATO ammo? Gosh...

I meant the calibre of the rifle, but India has had problems manufacturing ammo.

They bought American sig sauers not long ago but the locally made ammo kept blowing up the barrels.
