Is there a limit in which the durability of steel can't support the hull turning?
Yes, since by just thickening the steel girder (keel, any other part) you're not gonna get linear cost efficiency. Double the thickness won't mean double the durability.

that being said, theoretical limit to longest/largest single hull ship may be unknown... and is certainly somewhere way, way up there past the mile range. Trouble is, percentage of usable ships space would be much lower on such a mammoth, precisely because of all the reinforcements needed for such huge strains. And it'd still be too expensive to justify the gains.

there is a reason why military ships are sticking to certain sizes, while commercial ships can still afford to go bigger and longer. They're just not efficient.

With existing off-shore drilling platform technology, you can build a large, stationary version. Maybe for the South China Sea?

Oh man that picture is so wrong.

First you have the American flag getting trampled on by walking sailors. Second, you have a runway that's the nightmare for all none-VTOl aircrafts! It makes a 25 degree turn in the middle of the runway. Third your largest runway in the middle can't land anything bigger than a fighter due to the proximity of the buildings. Popular mechanics. :nana:

Doesn't China already have a fortified "island" base?

Here's one off British coast, called Sealand. Um... it's the world's smallest country.

The only territories claimed by PRC that's kinda far away is Nansha islands, where the PLA occupies 8 reefs:

Malaysia occupied Danwan Jiao (Swallow Reef) and this is what they did with it:

In comparison, this is a typical PRC "stronghold":

Since the PRC doesn't have any oversea territorial claims or security pacts, I don't see why the PLAN needs a mobile off-shore base? It's probably more cost effective to follow Malaysia's example and build up one of the reefs with a real air strip.

Why do they even bother with such a presence on a small reef? Does adding a building strengthen their argument of possession?

The PRC already does this. Woody Island:
