Don't most AshM have a cruise altitude of 20~30 meters? And if that's the case, wouldn't DDG 167 be able to intercept those missiles in their cruise altitude?
167 would be able to intercept them anyways. That's what the HH-7s are for.

well, how is it going to detect the missile from that far out? If it's a sea-skimming missile, you can detect it at most 20 km from the ship.
COnsidering the blast radius of the warhead, that's probably low enough.

Please bear my extreme ignorance on this issue. I looked up on Global Security, Wikipedia and this very own site and they all got the SA-N-12s, the SA-N-7s, as well as the RIF listed as having a min altitude of 25-30 meters. Does that mean none of the ships that have those missiles can shoot down anything other than aircrafts?
HQ-7 is listed by Global Security as having a minimum altitude of 15 meters, but that's about it.

Even FM-90N has a minimum altitude of 5 m. I personally don't think HH-7 will have any problem with sea skimmer in general. They are pretty much the most reliably anti-missile system that PLAN has. As for RIF, I think it's main purpose in Russian Navy was always to engage the opposing aircrafts, since its maximum range is longer than the maximum range of harpoon and leaving the anti-missile to kinzhal and CIWS. I'm pretty sure shtil can engage anti-ship missiles though, but not sure what the minimum altitude is. It was on a kanwa article I think.
