I've met HKers abroad and even though they don't like mainlanders/China etc they aren't deluded into thinking they're not Chinese.
It's just a small subset of very weird [but vocal] people.
Eg. some taiwanese people think they're ethnically Japanese or even Dutch
r/hongkong during the 2019 protests were saying Hong kongers genes are different to mainlanders etc
It's all nonsense

True these people do make up the majority of HK elites meaning they do pose a threat.

These people don't make the majority of HK elites
The majority of HK elites have made their fortune from China, so they are not so delusional
I would wager that anyone so delusional or simply stupid will not find much success in life because they are unable to deal with reality

How about those who hold a BNO passport? from what I gather these people are the most ardent anti China because they don't considered themselves as Chinese as they hold a foreign passport, Same with those Taiwanese who hold US passport.

You don’t need to be able to deal with reality to be a delusional cult leader that can attract equally delusional/fanatical followers and actually competent “subordinates” who found the right opportunity and group of idiots to control.

You gathered that from Twitter? Mainstream media? My experience (which is a lot since I am from Canada) is 95% of these people just see these foreign passports (Canadian, US, British, and I will assume BNO too) as a luxury. It's easier to buy overseas property, educated overseas, and if something really hit the fan, somewhere to run away to.

For Canada in particular, education is an especially big draw. The domestic university student tuition is a small fraction of international student tuition, and that's without paying a single dime in taxes ever. Plus it is not particularly difficult to get into a top school (at least that is my own feeling) Meanwhile, HK universities' are the complete opposite. On top of this, there is a large cadre of Canadian graduates in HK, so Canadian schools have a pretty good reputation.

You don’t need to be able to deal with reality to be a delusional cult leader that can attract equally delusional/fanatical followers and actually competent “subordinates” who found the right opportunity and group of idiots to control.

But even cult leaders usually have a limited following. Believing that an HKer is not Chinese is no different from believing Aliens will deliver you to a new space utopia. How many cult leaders are successful business moguls (since the original post was about HK's elite)?

Man looking back, this was one massive Loss for the west here. Not only did China not take the bait but it managed to win by doing nothing. In doing so it completely exposed the western narrative as a load of bs. It also shows that the energy that the riots have isn't really that great and once reality comes to them, they will pipe down fast. I can see similar energy with Taiwan DPP supporters and I wonder how dedicated they will be when shit hits the fan. Or more importantantly how fake that western virtue signaling reddit energy is and how quickly they abandoned it when they were on the losing end.

This win will age well as time passes proving a China was right all along. And the west who so claimed to support HK is now trying to kill it. HK has a new enemy and I hope this time it puts up a better fight. The west will not be merciful like China.
