Why would a bomber need tails when the fighters are tailless, surely outmaneuvering J-36 and J-XX are not part of the requirements

By way before do you mean months, weeks, years?

It was just interesting that there's fairly recently this high flying thing with the long contrail, now this pic @marcello posted contains a variable geometry design... Which naturally would be compatible with high velocity (?)
