TSMC is planning to set up shop in USA. I am sorry to say it is a stupid idea to exchange TSMC for Taiwan independence, when China can overturn the table by simply taking back Taiwan in the coming few months, thus pocketing both Taiwan and TSMC at one go. And what can Trump do about this?
Naval drill at Bohai for 2.5 months is a harbinger of things to come, as far as the Taiwan issue is concerned.

The issue on TW Island for the Chinese is not about economy, social nor technology. It is fundamental to their existence as a sovereign civilisation. The rejuvenation of the Chinese Civilisation entail the need to undo the last remnant of the series unequal treaties signed under the Century of Humiliation ; The surrender of tw island to Japan.

The taking back of tw island is enshrined within the PRC constitution as one of the primary destiny of their Chinese Civilisation(Zhong Hua Min Zhu). There is no way out of it. Zero. Nilch. The chinese is willing to lose their lives in reunifying their nation, thus the question should be about whether US and allies be willing enough to send their soldiers to death stopping the conclusion of the Chinese Civil War.

China don't care for the ignorance and arrogance of the Angglo Saxxon politicians in Washington. The State Dept and Pentagon are the ones that knew the true extent of the danger when it comes to playing with fire by toying with China's sovereign integrity. They knewselves who is the predatory and the one on offense and who is the merely defending their nation.

You are assuming 5nm is economically feasible.

It's not an assumption. 5nm is ALREADY economically feasible.

We already see Apple, Huawei, AMD, Xlinux, Broadcomm, Nvidia, Qualcomm as confirmed TSMC 5nm customers.
If we look at the examples of Huawei and Apple:

Huawei sales are becoming China-centric.
But that is still enough for them to justify the cost of designing a 5nm chip
And then have TSMC manufacture this chip.

If Apple were to lose China, that is only 15% of their sales.
So Apple can still justify designing and manufacturing for 5nm.

Apple and qualcomm are two biggest customers for 7nm.and 5nm. If China seriously hurting apple and qualcomm inside China, and losing Hauwei as a customer , it will seriously throttle and delay 5nm.

I would also add intel and nvidia to the hit list.

Lots of companies want 5nm for their chips, but TSMC doesn't have enough capacity for everyone.
So if Apple and Qualcomm were to lose China, it wouldn't make much difference in the adoption of 5nm.

Thats the forecast.
As of today, no one is producing 5nm physically.

Right now everyone is hurting by the virus.
If losing huawei and China throttle apple, qualcomm, watch out

Watch out? you mean US will escalate more or by watch out you mean the China will finally take ban hammer action?

With the pseudo N+1 7nm, will Huawei's 5G expansion still be able to continue? Sorry if my question about Huawei is in a wrong thread.
As of today, the leading edge chip is 7nm. TSMC has 120 days before US new restriction comes into effect. During this time Huawei can stockpile the parts before SMIC 7nm come onboard.

Huawei Kirin 1000 supposedly on 5nm. Looks like its not going to happen.
Its critical for China to beat up on apple, qualcomm to stall the 5nm progress so everybody stay put with 7nm. Ban mediatek and samsung 5nm into China.

Everything is relative. Of course 5G can be realized with only 7nm as long as your competitor dont have faster parts.

I was replying to andrew, he saying its economically feasible to produce 5nm, no, thats not for certain especially if China dropping the hammer.
