That's the way markets work, unfortunately. No foresight, no contingency planning, certainly no sense of patriotism - just do things the easy way and make a quick buck.

Odd. Is the company fraudulent? Anyway, you seem to know quite a bit about this field. Why not start a company that manufactures this equipment? Do things the right way and make yourself some ca$h. There should be a lot of money flowing into this field with the government so interested.
This is national project, it's way beyond a few individual collaboration.

The Trump administration mounted an extensive campaign to block the sale of Dutch chip manufacturing technology to China, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo lobbying the Netherlands government and White House officials sharing a classified intelligence report with the country’s Prime Minister, people familiar with the effort told Reuters.

What an irony, China actively try to develop its civilian plane so US won't try to block Boeing or Airbus going to China.
But China neglected on overall lithography development that's why US finding that weak spot and hit it hard.

I wouldn't say this is disgusting it's more about China's negligence more than anything. I still yet to see signs of them turning the corner and blow that trumpet for mass galvanization.

Huawei 5G leadership could be in jeopardy.

That's the price has to pay for reliance on Western tech.

If US cannot have 5G leadership it can sabotage your 5G leadership. Sabotage is lower cost than build something constructive.

I already concede that Huawei may lose its 5G leadership

Maybe, take a page out of US and do some sabotage like better focus on development of J31 and WS19 and starts mass manufacturing and ship them to iran.

Focus more on nuclear carrier development and have 6 carrier fleet and plan for Taiwan situation.

Looks like China got stopped at 12nm and will stuck there for long while.

Better buy more those current immersion ArF lithography equipment and stockpile them , second hand equipments would also do. Because once Taiwan situation rise, even those equipments would get blocked later on.

The movement now is bigger, total Western tech independence not just US tech independence. Rid of TSMC and Taiwan tech eventually.

Of course not. The CCP is pathetic. Sure, it cares about China and about China prospering, but ONLY when its 100% sure that the route they are going to take wont so much as increase by 0.1% the chance of them losing power.

This is not a good government honestly. People like to talk about how good it is because of all 'its' achievements. LOL. The achievements would have happened anyway (and probably been even more breathtaking) if not for this government.

I'm not talking about the lack of democracy, but moreso the desperate and fearful way the CCP is latching onto power. Too scared to do anything that raises eyebrows.

Too scared to take risk.

ASML has a virtual monopoly on lithography. It would be interesting to see how the Chinese tech companies would react if the US government also pressures Taiwan's TSMC to cut off supply to mainland China. If China wants to develop their own processors, they should also develop their own lithography. I know it would require tens of billions and many years of research stretching over 1 - 2 decades (minimal). EUV is not easily copied without foreign aid. China doesn't have allies that can help them in this. All chip manufacturing for modern CPUs, GPUs, and most high performance FPGAs (both x86 and ARM) is done in Korea, Canada, USA, Taiwan, and Isreal. The equipment all of them use is from ASML in the Netherlands. A 29 billion dollar fund won't get them anywhere close to being competitive with the rest of the world. Stuff like this will make us lose several years of technological progress. Imagine if Europe knew about paper and printing centuries earlier like China did. Now even 5 years is a huge difference.

China is making swift progress on its 200 billion yuan (US$29.08 billion) fund aimed at investing in home-grown semiconductor development, as the world’s second-largest economy looks to reduce dependence on foreign chips amid a tech war with the US.

I feel like if China had a Singapore model, sure maybe more authoritarian but nonetheless fundamentally the same, China would be so far ahead of where it is now the Great Game for World influence between China and the US would be in full flow (and China likely winning on most fronts).

I feel for China. The greatest potential in all history, being bottle-necked by a bunch of men who (while more patriotic and honest than the leaders of most third world corrupt hellholes) would rather stymie its potential and hold onto power, than allow it to blossom into the hyperpower of wealth creation and military/financial dominance that it is eventually destined to be.

Does no one else feel this?

Where do you get the scale to so confidently conclude a $29 billion fund wont "get them anywhere close" to being competitive? Genuinely want to know.

It's more about Chinese culture.

Even Huawei is kind of conservative in my taste. I prefer them from the beginning have a vision of top down, hungry and do it all like Samsung. Look at Samsung its 3nm result come out ready to surpasss TSMC. Samsung also have 5G product. It has phones, memory , CPU and it made all those on its own. Korean and Japanese are more aggressive in this respect.

Chinese companies more into play safe mode and quick path to profit mentality

Now Chinese government as of now still not aware of implication of Trump effort inblocking ASML.
Their current investment still routine play, doesn't address the fundamental issue.otherwise they would setup a task force specifically to monitor the progress.
