General ship propulsion

Re: PLAN ship propulsion thread

You keep asking the same question over and over again.First you say there is no way Varyag will sail because there is no engine. NOW YOU SAY THAT CHINA CANNOT BUILT AIRCRAFT CARRIERE.

I am not saying that china cant build AC. read carefully

As to Varyag propulsion They are definitely domesticaly design . Turbine is mostly built by Oriental Steam Turbine in Hanwang Sichuan . Totaly destroyed during Sichuan earth quake. But have been completely rebuilt. Oriental steam turbine has long association with chinese navy. This company have built steam turbine for navy for years.
They are one of three top Chinese power generating company

Hmm. Made a search about it. Turns out that this company hasnt built a single military product since the 70´s, when it supplied marine turbines for three naval ships. try better

Re: PLAN ship propulsion thread

I see. Then china builds those engines, but they arent chinese. they are merely european engines built in china, with chinese names. Not unsurprisingly. China´s naval technology still very incipient, even compared to the other PLA branches. , but we have to keep in mind that china only took the navy seriously since the colapse of the USSR, when it not longer had to worry about its northern border. thats only 20 years. But they have a long way to go.

the only remaining question is the Varyag´s propulsion. Which russian manufacturer builts it ?? does russia still has spare engines to give china, or china somehow got hold of the tech to build it ??

thats important if they want to build aircraft carriers in the future.
Japan and South Korea and any other shipbuilding nation, probably even Russia, produce the same types of European marine diesel engines.

There is nothing dishonorable or shameful about building and using European diesel engines. The US Navy uses American-built, French-designed Pielstick diesels in a variety of ship classes, ranging from the LPD-17 SAN ANTONIO over LCS-1 FREEDOM to T-AO 187 HENRY J. KAISER, and so does China.

The Russians produce their own naval diesels, but they seem to be uncompetitive on the world market.

So China, the US, Japan and South Korea as well as many other countries all use locally built Sulzer, MAN, Pielstick, Waerasilla diesels. Does anyone know for certain that Russia doesn't build licensed European diesels beside those of their own design?

There is a difference. Unlike those nations, china runs the risk of having supply of parts/expertise terminated if the USA puts enough pressure on those countries. SEMT pielstick is from gemany, a nation highly sensitive to american concerns. it hasnt happen so far cause the USA sees it as inimportant/unworthy of provocking china/germany. but if one day politics push it enough, it could happen. Has already happen too many times.

I dont think russia outsurces propulsion of any of its military vessels. Although its latest coast guard ship (rubin class) has german engines.

Though SEMT-Pielstick is wholly owned by MAN since 2006, it is French. It is beyond my comprehension why Alstom sold this successful company to the Germans.

No matter your concern about US pressure, Type 054A is powered by Pielstick diesels.

Not my concern. im not chinese. Its china´s concern

And its not only type 054A. its also type 071, currently the largest warship in PLAN.

To have varyag and future AC´s powered by western propulsion (not even russian) would be bad.

Re: PLAN ship propulsion thread

All parts are made in China. Pressure from the US will cause China to depend on its own engineers to continue development on their own but would not impact production or maintenance of engines for which a license has been acquired.
