slightly OT.

this is an study by US NWC on the chinese ship building industry.

slightly dated and offers a perspective outside in, but still worth the read.

Re: Chinese indigenous naval engines

Just combining this with our propulsion thread. If you follow this, you'd know that they have already mastered the capability to locally produce QT-25000 for 052C, Pielstick engine for 054A and have some indigenous gas turbines ready/almost ready for other ships. For the larger ships, they have been locally producing diesel engines for a long time, so that's not a problem. Even for something like 022, they have produced their own version of Kamewa waterjet.

what about the engines for varyag ?? what are they ?? domestic or foreign design/produced ??

And is there any signal that china has anything in the vicinity of 071 propulsion ??

Re: PLAN ship propulsion thread

Marine diesel engines are mostly designed in Europe and build where the ships are built. So probably all marine diesels types are built in China, as well as in many other countries.

The 071 propulsion should be fine. They can produce all those diesel engines domestically for the larger ships.

As for Varyag, I'm really not sure what they put in there. I'm assuming there was some work with the Ukrainians to get a more up to date propulsion system in there.

Re: PLAN ship propulsion thread

I think it is well-known that China has MTU diesels in submarines and Pielstick diesels in surface ships.

In fact, the first I ever heard about 071 was a press release from Pielstick several years ago that they had contracted diesel engine production for one LPD, 10 LST (actually just 9, Type 072A/YUTING II class) and 10 LSM (Type 073A/YUNSHU/YUDENG II class).

As delft points out, diesel engines are usually built by the shipyard itself.

As for the propulsion of VARYAG, the steam turbines and boilers were designed and built in Leningrad. The Ukraine only does gas turbines, by Zarya in Nikolayev.

I see. Then china builds those engines, but they arent chinese. they are merely european engines built in china, with chinese names. Not unsurprisingly. China´s naval technology still very incipient, even compared to the other PLA branches. , but we have to keep in mind that china only took the navy seriously since the colapse of the USSR, when it not longer had to worry about its northern border. thats only 20 years. But they have a long way to go.

the only remaining question is the Varyag´s propulsion. Which russian manufacturer builts it ?? does russia still has spare engines to give china, or china somehow got hold of the tech to build it ??

thats important if they want to build aircraft carriers in the future.

You keep asking the same question over and over again.First you say there is no way Varyag will sail because there is no engine. NOW YOU SAY THAT CHINA CANNOT BUILT AIRCRAFT CARRIERE. Once again China has well developed Power Plant industry They have been exporting power plant up to 600 Mw . China built 1000MW Power plant one every week. So large is the demand for Power in China. Don't think that power plant is so exotic. Combustion engine or diesel is different matter since company like MAN or Sulzer has developed this kind of engine for over hundred years and the shipyard client want to install this engine on their ships. Though China has developed Diesel engine for ships

As to Varyag propulsion They are definitely domesticaly design . Turbine is mostly built by Oriental Steam Turbine in Hanwang Sichuan . Totaly destroyed during Sichuan earth quake. But have been completely rebuilt. Oriental steam turbine has long association with chinese navy. This company have built steam turbine for navy for years.
They are one of three top Chinese power generating company

I try to dig documentary of this company showing their large and modern facilities. We got glimpse of this company from video about Sichuan EQ
