I thought (but didn't say) the second option would be adopted. Maybe it could stay under the deck all the time and shoot vertically (the Advanced Gun System should have originally been operated this way ... and with a triangular barrel:

Jura, French built something similar to what you want :)

The biggest issue for a AGS on a sub is really is it needed? when you have submarine launched missiles?

practically no. but just look at that! how can you say no.

Like this. N O.

Drag, it was built to act as a cruiser that submerged.
Surface threats. Bombarding a target meant it was on the surface and open to be a target from surface threats.
safety/ function good luck firing a high pressure round from a flooded barrel. the cannons had to be secured and plugged before submerging, every time.
now compare to submarine launched.
both tube and VLS are built into the hull.
both tube and VLS can be fired well submerged.
No worry about flooded barrels.
bonus points for range.

after doing some reading on the subject, it seems I was wrong that a fleet of small carriers can do all the jobs of super-carriers. it depends on what kind of missions the navy is expected to perform.
If you want carriers for power projection. ie, the kind of mission like what NATO did to Libya. You want big supercarriers. Nimitz size is probably optimal, the smallest you can get away with is probably the new QE carriers. Small carriers simply can't carry the fuel and munitions necessary to sustain high sortie rate over an extended campaign.
However, if the navy is only expected to perform sea control missions or sea denial, a fleet of small carriers may just be the answer.

There could be another problem, shen: Let's suppose one navy had three small carriers, and the opposing navy had one "whopper" :) Then the smaller ships could be taken one by one (of course assuming they didn't fight in one group)!

A gun could be useful for the proper preparation of enemy's coastal installations right before the landing :)
Sure but again have to be on the surface. and the big troop ships would give it away unless you build a submarine amphibious task force

They have a special little extra stand to display the fourth aircraft alone...while having three on the sub.

I will just build the sub and detail it, with one aircraft on the cat ready to launch, and the other two lined up in the hanger ready to come out in their turn...like this:

Except mine will be a full hull version on its stand and not in a diorama like that.

What's the status of that modeling, Jeff? :)

Working on the 1/72 scale P-8A Poseidon now...almost done with it. Will post finished pictures of it on the P-8A Poseidon in 1/72 scale thread I have regarding it probably tomorrow.

Then it is on to the Russian Carrier Strike group. Will take me several months to do that. Will do the Peter the Great Kirov CGN, class, the Kuznetsov carrier (of course), an Akula II SSN, the new Yasen SSN, a Udaloy II, and a Sov.

So it will be a while before I get to my I-400, though I may take a break in all of that Russian building and slip it in there.
