He didn't do it because he supports CPC, as far as we can tell he did it ironically as criticism, only other 反贼 decided to understand it straight and assume he's a little pinkie. He's being pilloried in 反贼 circles right now and disowned by them.

All the drama is highly entertaining (in a "shut up, we're discussing freedom of speech" way) for watermelon eating folks watching from the sideline:

Here's BBC reporting it. Notice something? It says those 24 characters are socialist core values but never bothers to explain what those core values are. So terrified are they of it, they fear if they translate it and people read it they might think those values aren't so bad.

Note: in the 法治 part you may notice there's a small question mark inside the character:

That was there before it was destroyed because it was put there by the original guys. It's apparently because they had something stolen and reported to the police and the coppers wouldn't do anything about it.
