So, is a "fruit" bat more hygienic than a regular bat? Mmm...
When I was an expat in Singapore, several of my Singaporean and Malaysian friends told me that as a kid, they would follow their father or uncle to hunt for fruit bat (called Flying Fox locally) in the plantations. Their mothers or aunts would either deep fry them or grill them over open fire. They said that fruit bats taste real good because they eat fruits, unlike ordinary bats that eat insects.
I ate fruit bat once in a wild game restaurant in Johor Baru (in Malaysia just across the border from Singapore) around the year 2000. Did not find it very tasty. But it did not taste bad either.
Eating fruit bats is quite common in SE Asia, including Singapore (in the old days), Malaysia, and Indonesia.
