Charles-de-Gaulle ready for mission "Arromanches", long mission 5 months, it embedded a part of its CAW today the rest tomorrow, President will come on board tomorrow and definitely en route to the Gulf

TF composition :

  • CDG, CVN
  • Chevalier Paul, DDG with a NH-90 first operationnal deployment
  • Montcalm, FFG
  • Meuse, CS
  • A Rubis, SSN
CAW :
  • 12 Rafale

The next-mission nuclear aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" and its battle group should take a tour especially with the coming tomorrow afternoon on the ship, the President of the Republic François Hollande, less than a week after the tragic events that have devastated France.

Although long planned, the commitment of the aircraft carrier and its air group in a major overseas operation should indeed be explained by the Head of State during the speech he is to deliver on the ship.

After a stop on the basis of Hyères, Hollande will indeed pose a helicopter on the Charles de Gaulle to present his wishes to the Armed but above announcing his intentions militarily. He will be accompanied by Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, the Chief of Staff of the Armed and three counts of Naval Staff of the Air Force and the Army earth.

Twelve Rafale
After making a "loop" that morning in Toulon harbor to check its magnetic signature, the aircraft carrier is currently winning the high seas to receive the first part of its air group from the basis of naval aviation Landivisiau in Brittany.

This group will be complemented by other aircraft arrivals tomorrow morning will proceed tomorrow maneuvers (catapult-launchings and landings) to the Chief of the Armies. It will be up to the final 12 Rafale and 9 SEM (Modernised Super Etendard) based in Landivisiau, an E2C Hawkeye radar aircraft based in Lorient and three helicopters based at Hyères (a Dolphin, Panther and an Alouette III ).

As for the escort of the "Charles de Gaulle", it brings together anti-aircraft frigate "Chevalier Paul", which sailed for the first time in a helicopter NH90 Cayman operations, anti-submarine frigate "Montcalm" oil-tanker "Meuse" and a nuclear submarine attack whose identity remains confidential.

As I stated on the other thread...I find it interesting that the CDG would only carry a single E-2C on such a deployment as this where combat is likely.

Two Hawkeyes would ensure that any mechanical or electrical, or other problem aboard the single Hawkeye would not result in the carrier not having its embarked AEW capability available.

We have 3 E-2C in general always 2 deployed with the CVN ( maybe a problem now ) and 1 remains for training to Lann Bihoué, where based 4F sqn.

3 short, ideal would have been 4 for have 3 deployed on the CVN to ensure a permanence 24h/24 mainly for CAP mission with only 2 just if one have a problem.
But this will not pose a problem for this mission, which is not against an real army.

US CVN carry 5 now before 4.

So...then to be sure...two aircraft will embark on the CDG for this mission and not just one?

The posts all say 1 x E-2C and I think that is incorrect.

French Navy Horizon Class Destroyer Chevalier Paul Succeeds in Complex Air Defense Test
g3Riybt.jpg

The "missile test" division of the French procurement agency (DGA) and the French Navy conducted on 13 January 2015 a complex firing test: The scenario consisted in the launch of an Aster 30 surface-to-air missile from the Horizon class air defense destroyer Chevalier Pau" (D621) against an air target pursuing a friendly aircraft. The objective was to confirm the discrimination and intercept ability of the Aster 30 missile when faced with two very interlinked radar tracks.
