I was very curious that why the general didn't mention AAW.

AAW is best left to ships equipped with long range surface to air missiles. The Type 54 series frigates are equipped with what can be considered more of a point or self-defence anti-air system.

Actually, the point-defense AAW capabilities of the Type 054A could be used in a goal tender mode in defense of other vessels in an "inner ring" scenario for any task force, where it could also use its helo and other AASW capabilities for the same purpose.

This would work for either an amphibious task force, helping to protect a vessels like the Type 071 or Type 072, or for inner ring defense of a carrier in a carrier strike group.

Now, whether the PLAN will use the Type 054A in this fashion is yet to be seen.

If a ship is equipped with medium or long-range VL-SAM system that could be used to defend against attacks for the whole task group, it can quality for AAW role. It's just that with medium ranged missiles, you can only defend, versus long-ranged missiles can enable you to attack aircraft before they launch their payloads.

Latest info suggests VLS onboard 054A can house both SAM and ASROC. Good news.

what ASROC? CY-1 is cancelled, and CY-2 was never sighted anywhere. To fit an ASROC in Type 054A's VLS means something not derived from the YJ-8 series.

Its no brainer trying to fit a rocket on the tail end of a YU-7 light torpedo, but are the VLS tubes big enough?

the second 054A from HD hasn't been commissioned yet. This appears to be that ship going back to HD yard for some final work before going into service.

Isn't the second HD ship, the one numbered 529? That should have been commissioned already since it already had the number painted on. It also has a different hull water line color than this one. Both of these ships have the black on the second mast and the rim around the funnel is white.

I think the uncommissioned 054A is the one from Huangpu, made along 570. I think both ships have all white masts and funnels.

Have you checked out the picture for a new Yuan (second type) that was on the water and being fitted out? Except that the date this time in on January 2007.
