No it's you that are confused by the perspective. Its clearly seen in this picture. There's a 16 larger spots which most of you think forms the hatches to to two missile silos but it would mean that the shape of the hacth and silo is rectangular which is illogical.

That picture clearly shows one hinge for a square hatch. If its illogical than most likely your prediction is wrong.

This is case where two inturperation coalides and to determine which one is right, we need better pics...I'm willing to admit if I'm wrong and will do it, but not until I see better photos....

Like Jeff head, the latest pics are supporting your case but the earlier pics form different and in case of recognition in better angle supports mine (which is that the two hinches like showed by Jeff are illogical shape to be missilesilos) So we need the "third and final" proof to say which one is right.

But before the last sets of pics the general agreement was that the VLS would form a V-shape (open to bottom) if looked from straight forward form the deck level...thats clearly not evident in these last pics. And as I doupt there would be different VLS in the two launched ships, this really is a big mystery from every angle...

In fact that could very well be the case. The two versions of the pictures show systems different enough to make me believe that the two ships have different VLS systems. It's possible that they are still testing to see which system to use. One could be a domestic version while another is imported.

These are clearly different systems.

They've done enough photo comparisons on Chinese forums to convince me that these two sets of photos point to the same VLS. Whether you guys choose to believe it is a different story. I mean they've had that HH-16 VLS complex on 891 as long as we can remember. Has anyone seen a second complex?

I agree with Tphuang, it's douptfull that there would be two set of VLS. Weaponsystems are rarely tested onboard operational warships (it's usually done with NEOL ships or dedicated trialsships) and hardly everin just launched units. What they are about to do when they decide that the other is better? Send the ship with the "loosing" VLS back to the shipyard and change the system? I could find alot more better use of money than that...

...and yet the US Navy is building two different batches of LCS with completely different hull designs.

I would not expect either that there were two different VLS systems for the two ships, but those pictures look like two different types of hatches to me...but it could just be the angle and distortion. Ultimately, more pictures will come out that put all of this to rest.

I think I've figured out the apparent differences between the two pictures.
I think what happened is that the top of the VLS system including the roof and hatches can be lifted up. For example like this.

This could be used for construction or maintenance, or as a possible means to reload the missiles. But it's the only explanation that I can think of as to why the two sets of pictures look so different.

No rule without exeption...and we really shouldn't compare USN doings to the rest of the world as they are or different planet when it comes to...about anything...

but lets just wait the seccond round...

@_@ I think you guys are stretching the 16 vs. 32 VLS cel debate. I mean if we just wait a little while, I'm sure we'll see better photos with exact VLS cel count.

I'm more interested in the fact that they're moving away from Russian roundish-style SAM VLS toward Western square-ish SAM VLS system, as well as what missiles will go into the system. I'm betting my pennies on traditional single-use and single-missile design for this one. That is, we won't see multiple types of missiles loaded into those VLS cels, and it'd be 1 missile per cel and no quad-packs at this time.

I agree so very much! You guys just need to wait. If there are this many pictures available online the truth will be out soon enough. It will be intresting to see who's right. My bet is on 16 missiles.

But all this chit chat could be done with if:

popeye sez;>>> All this speculation and guess work could be eliminated,as I have stated before, if the PLA was not so secrective.

Honestly, Why can't they just have a press confrence and say. This is our new Type 054 FFG. We will build X of this type ship. And it's statistics will be as follows:

Blah, Blah , Blah...

Now how hard is that?

But if they did that what fun would all this discussion be???
