It Was once Upon a time nessisary for Military services to develup there own Skis and boot bindings. This was because the boots used were just standard issue cold weather boots and the binding of the time used in civilian sports were two rigid to allow rapid detach and alow the soldier to go prone for a fire fight. but then things changed around the 1970's Snowboarding started and by the 1990s it was taking ski slopes by storm.
Now Snow Boarding required a binding that could rapidly detach form there boards, they also needed a flexible boot.
Ski makers were smart they realized making one boot for one sport and another for another was expencive and unnecessary so they started blending things. the result a hybrid now comes the military there wants are the same a flexible boot that can be worn on its own or with ski's and snow shoes can rapidly detach and a apir of good light weight ski's.
So my friend seeing the PLA use Off the shelf Ski's is par for the Course.

I think your second thought explains the reason for the first. The sights are floating around way up there well the thin cheek rest is way down there.

There really is no good reason to have that carrying handle placed so high on the rifle. I think it could be a full 2cm lower and still not interfere with the charging handle. Do you know if it is reciprocating, BTW?

It doesn't matter as long as you zeroed in on your weapon. All weapons type are as different as people's facial structure and height. So long as the shooter gets a good zero in and practice where to place their cheek and nose on the rifle according to the rifle type he/she should be fine.

Well the point is that with the QBZ your check cannot ever get low enough to rest on the stock. You therefore repeatedly introduce an error in aim that gets magnified the further out you go. The rifle's zero depends on consistent alignment of 3 points: your eye, the back sight, and the front sight. If the position of your eye can wander from shot to shot as it's more likely to do with no cheek weld, your accuracy suffers. Cheek weld is one of the most basic fundamentals of shooting, along with breathing, trigger control, natural point of aim, etc. This is less important in a combat situation where you have to shoot and scoot, suppression fire, urban combat situations, and so on. But if you want to be accurate with any kind of long range shot, get a good cheek weld or go home.

The QBZ95's charging handle is reciprocating. so the use of a guard is needed unless they take the QBZ in to a rebuild.

In that case the guard/handle would only be needed if the user is going to put some kind of optic device on the rifle. There are many firearms with reciprocating charging handles that are not recessed into any kind of guard, and they are usually in areas more inconvenient for the user (on the sides), but more convenient for optics.
