US: Defense Contractor Tried to Smuggle F-35 Blueprints to Iran

An engineer for a major American defense contractor tried to smuggle thousands of secret documents, including blueprints, on America's multi-billion-dollar F-35 stealth fighter to Iran in boxes labeled as "household goods," U.S. prosecutors say.

Mozaffar Khazaee, a dual U.S.-Iranian citizen, was reportedly arrested late last week as he was attempting to travel to Germany and then on to Iran. Weeks earlier, Khazaee had arranged for a shipping company to take boxes containing "sensitive technical manuals, specification sheets, and other proprietary material" related to the F-35 and its engines to a contact in Iran, according to an affidavit filed by a Special Agent of Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.

The reams of documents were discovered in November when Customs officers inspected a truck shipment Khazaee had sent from Connecticut to California, which was intended to go on to Hamadan, Iran, the affidavit said. The 44 boxes, which had been described to the shipping company as containing "books and college-related items, two suitcases, a vacuum cleaner and some other items," actually held "thousands of pages contained in dozens of manuals/binders relating to the JSF [F-35 Joint Strike Fighter] program." ..............

Well he was employed by Pratt & Whitney, so apparently they have some explaining to do.

Actually , this is legislative problem . In current PC climate any company refusing to hire someone based on ethnicity could get sued .

Somebody was asking questions about this

On Your Radar

New fairings have shown up on F-35 fighters; two ogival bumps on the top rear, forward of each vertical fin, and two on the bottom, one either side, just forward of the tailhook housing. Lockheed Martin test pilot Bill Gigliotti told the Daily Report the fairings are radar cross section enhancers, put there so air traffic controllers can see the stealthy F-35s when they fly through civil airspace. The F-22 has a similar device, and the Lockheed F-117 also sported a faceted version on each side of the fuselage. The radar reflectors—sometimes called Luneburg lenses—are removed when the aircraft is employed in stealth mode.

58 FS at Eglin just received 3 new F-35A, he get now 21 on 24 almost complete.

The next are for Luke and later Hill.

The proposed budget would allot $10.3 billion to the US Air Force for new aircraft and related equipment, $110 less than requested. It also would give the USAF $4.4 billion to purchase new missiles.

The bill funds the USAF’s F-35 programme at $3.4 billion, nearly $200 million less than requested. The savings are partly achieved by cutting advanced procurement funding for two aircraft

The bill provides nearly $2.3 billion in USN funding for Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter programme, less than the $2.5 billion requested.

It cuts F-35 procurement by one aircraft, a $79 million savings.

I think F-35 ordered for FY 2014 correspond LRIP 8, initialy US services want for this batch 19 A/6 B/ 4 C : 29 then now 17 and 9 : 26.

One comment the production of the F-22 has had interrupted in 2010 to promote the F-35 and order more and finally with budget problems /sequestrations there will be about 1/3 of F-35 planned in 2010 in less !

Fortunately the price dropped out partially offsetting these problems.

the F-35A joint strike fighter, lost advance procurement funds for two jets that would be purchased in fiscal 2015. The Navy also lost one F-35C variant. Congress also earmarked $6 million to begin studying what could be included in the plane’s Block 4 software, which likely won’t be seen until the end of the decade

Block 4

Enhanced version. Upgrades include increased airframe life, improved power/thermal management, Multifunction Advanced Data Link and Link 16 datalink, JSOW Block 3, AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II, B61 and Joint Strike Missile (Norwegian aircraft) integration. Expected to be released by 2019. The FY2014 budget request shows that B61-12 integration is scheduled for Block 4A and Block 4B aircraft in 2015-2021 with full operational capability in 2022 – three years after the first B61-12 is scheduled to be delivered

Yes. The 100th production F-35 made its first flight on December 15, 2013:

I'm very happy with this.. I remember a few years ago when there was an outcry to cancel the program because of the cost. Jeff stated it would never happen. He was so correct....It is not happening!
