re: F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Thread

The main problem is software integration, and the F-22's avionics is very difficult to program and develop for. Increment 3.2 is extremely expensive (it's $8 billion dollars to attempt to integrate advanced SDB functionality, AIM-9X, AIM-120D, and MADL), and they've already dropped the helmet sight due to technical challenges.

Right you are, but the Raptor is also very difficult to Hack or Jam, kinda designed in Security, I did hear the acting Secretary of the Air Force is suggesting the Air Force will cut up to 24 F-35As in the next five years do to sequestration, with most of the cuts coming in later blocks, they are hoping not to have to cut that many, but that depends on cost, but disappointing to say the least. brat

Wll Street Journal said:
SEOUL--South Korea's Defence Ministry said Friday that it will buy 40 stealth F-35 fighter jets from Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT) starting in 2018 after its rejection in September of planes built by rival Boeing Co. (BA).

The country's Joint Chiefs of Staff, however, said South Korea will buy an additional 20 next-generation fighter jets from 2023, adding that the purchase will not be restricted to F-35s, leaving the door open for Boeing and other aircraft makers to make fresh bids.

The budget for the purchases hasn't been set yet, it said.

South Korea's defence ministry said in September that Boeing's F-15 fighter jet fell short of its operating needs and reopened the bidding contest, in a move that highlights the challenge for global military chiefs of balancing affordability with securing expensive new technology.

Defence officials cited the need to address North Korea's nuclear threat with stealthy, radar-evading jets, though other regional tensions are also driving the preference for the latest technology.

South Korean air force officials have consistently indicated their preference for the F-35.

Buying 40, with an option for 20 more apparently.

I think the other 20 could be either a F-15 Silent Eagle or the Euro fighter Typhoon.
Once they start bringing in the F-35s, it is going to be hard to overcome the inertia and economy of scales that would push them towards more F-35s. Training, logistical considerations (like spare parts), etc. will all make life harder and more expensive for the South Koreans if they but too seperate aircraft types.

On the other hand, it does allow them to branch into something different if they are not satisfied with the F-35, and/or if they find them too costly to the point where the additional logistical costs still make the alternative cheaper.

We will have to see how it goes. Right now, given all they have said, and the way they have gone out of their way to get the F-35, I bet the next 20 are F-35s too at this point...unless problems arise.

So after a long 'bidding' war, SK comes back to what the US wants it to buy all along.
Do they get some price cuts for the trouble.

Actually the bean counters dictated that SK would have to "settle" for the silent EAGLE, the SK military said no way, we want the F-35, while I am certain that we appreciate more partners on the F-35, we do not dictate what they want, and they will be much safer in the F-35, which is much more L/O than the Eagle. To Imply that the US "dictated" what they would purchase is nonsense, and more to the point, its dishonest. brat

It is expensive. Clearly the ROK Military feels it is worth it...they went to great lengths to get the deal.

Time will tell if it actually is.

Personally, I believe the F-35 will end up being the modern F-16 and will be very widely exported.

Yes , but same things would have been included in F-15SE deal for around $100million per plane . There is no point in beating around the bush , F-35 is very expensive plane - it better be worth all that money .

Actually the lowest price for F-35A is 110 millions $ ( airframe 100 + reactor 10 ) for LRIP 7, definitely after when he is in FRP, about 2017, her price can be 100 millions maybe less but i think max 90.

Others fighters generation 4.5/+ costs about 60/100.

My friend , prices that you have mentioned are sales pitch , illusion for gullible . Yes , you could buy bare-bone fighter for that money , but you won't be able to do anything with it . In real world , you need spares , weapons , tools , equipment , training etc ... That is way South Korea is paying more then $150 million per plane for F-35 . And that is way Romania pays $817 million for 12 used F-16AM/BM , each about 20 years old .( $68 million per plane)

The F-35 prices are coming down. And they have been forecastr to for some time. Yes, those prices do not include all the extras, but that has always been the case on new aircraft buys.

The goal for the F-35 was to get its full production price down for USAF purchases to what the newest F-16 Block builds would cost the USAF at the time the F-35 goes into full production. They probably will not reach that, but they will get close.

Of course they pay more for the spare parts, the training, the weapons, equipment, etc. As I stated earlier on this thread, that is precisely why the cost is what it is.

But the cost per plane, without all of the extras, is coming down. And less is less, no matter how you cut it. Better to have that per plane price approaching...and then later...beating $100 million per aircraft, then to have it at $120 million.

Come on chief thundercloud, quit raining on everybody's parade, as you pointed out a 20 year old F-16 is still going for 68 million US, that's what you call value, a brand new F=35 at 125 million is a steal in comparison, shame the politicians killed the F-22 production, at 130 million a pop, its capabilities are "otherworldly". We don't need the little alien bird to win, the F-35 will prove very capable, it will be a winner, and those who partner will be capable of squeezing the very best out of her, the School House will be worth every dime, and that's something your not going to get elsewhere! brat
