Watching the leaked video it seems that there might be a lot of debris from the aircraft. I am sure that China could fish some small parts and then analyse its materials composition and how it reacts with radar.

They could then put it in a simulator and extrapolate the data with a full scale digital F-35.

Would certainly be able to get a lot of data if only some small external parts were found by PLAN

What's going to keep the US Navy top brass up in night is that they will never know how much, if any, Chinese will be able to learn about F-35 from this incident. I hope this will make some of them start thinking twice about having the show of FON this close to China.

China does not even need to send any surface ship to the vinities for show. Just leave all the speculations to the US.

Now I see how brilliant Zhao Lijian's reply of "not interested" is when he was asked if China will salvage the wreckage.

That sounds like wishful thinking. Any small fragments of the skin that broke off the jet will have probably moved in a different direction, settling in different areas (if they do at all). They'd also probably corrode unless they could be found quickly. The PLAN could easily spend years trawling the bottom of the sea bed and find nothing of value.

That's the same with all espionage. Do you think the PLA is aware of all the information the US or other NATO/5Eyes members hold on Chinese military technology? As much as there is democratic transparency, no one is going to publicise that.

If electronic databases are compromised you may be relatively certain what information was accessed, but that's nowhere near the full extent of what intelligence agencies get up to.

Per above I'm not convinced there's a real risk of serious damage to the US military from this crash. As you say, China and Chinese nationalists may want the US to be concerned, but I don't think it will change anything.

Besides, US operations aren't just a "show of force", they provide valuable training opportunities. Operating in South East Asia is not the same as operating off the US coast.

They might want to tighten social media security on the ship. One or two photo/or video leak is to be expected but videos from several different angles might provide confidential information to potential adversaries. Chinese style secrecy where they blot out the whole aircraft is excessive, but this is going too far in the other direction.

Maybe they should hand out burner phones to sailors during the duration of the deployment.

I heard that officials stated that social media leaks are now to be expected and that they won't be able to do much about it.

If they can take away tiktok this should be easy. Just use burner phones and monitor leaks. Otherwise actually important stuff like deployment area and even combat plans could be leaked. This really is a matter of national security.

I'm pretty sure tiktok is still used on US navy ships, at least on personal phones.

The only way this could be stopped would be a full lockdown on the internet, firewalls are just going to be bypassed like they are in China. That's tough to do without affecting morale as sailors are on deployment for months on end without much to do.

The leaker sounded like a Hispanic or African American female, probably low ranked. Either they were ignorant of the implications of releasing sensitive information, or they just didn't care. Not every person on a carrier is an nationalistic American who cares about opsec. To some its a job not much different to working at Walmart or McDonalds.

While many enlist not out of a sense of patriotism, but just so they could go to college. The US military establishment for their part are absolutely blatant about it by dangling it over prospective recruits.
