re: F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Thread

The Dutch Government Budget Office has published a report that says that over fifteen years the government has never given an honest answer to questions from parliament about JSF. This shows the strength ( weakness ) of Dutch democracy and it shows the possibility of the end to Dutch participation in the project. Do we really want to sacrifice the submarine service to the prospect of buying more than thirty F-35's? We are formally planning to buy 85 of them but the minister talked months ago in parliament about 69.

My sense is that the Dutch air force will get the JSF. The question is not if but how many. The original plan was to purchase 85 planes and now they are talking about 69, it won't surprise me if that number could go down even further in the future. The Dutch have already invested too much both politically and financially into the JSF project for them to stop in the middle of the road now. The air force and the main political parties have already agreed that the JSF is going to come to the Netherlands. The push back from the other political parties and the other branches of the armed forces over the cost of the JSF in my view will only affect the numbers of planes being purchased but won't lead to the cancellation of the JSF purchase for the Netherlands.

Also I learned long ago, perhaps matters have changed since, weldable Aluminum alloys are not well suited for structural use in aircraft.

Well my good friend, I should know better than to question you, and you are quite correct that the lowly rivets by the thousands have held us together for many years, I do however recollect that the report most specifically mentioned that the frame work was "welded", I could be wrong, perhaps the engineer, siege crossbow or airsuperiority could elaborate on welding aircraft structure, as it is my understanding that much of the F-22s center section etc are welded in the interest of greater strength and integrity??? The allusion was also made that the J-20 might have been as well in the center fuselage area??? Brat

P.S. I believe that the two primary allows used in AR platform rifles are 6061 which is weldable, and 7075 which is not weldable, while welding aluminum isn't that tough, welding Titanium is an "art-form" and if a titanium bicycle frame fails it will likely fail at the weld. Those same two allows have been used in the archery industry for many years for arrows as well as forged/machined handles for compound bows. End OT

You get most of the advantages of welding, avoiding stress concentration ( but you also loose its advantages ), by bonding. Already in the 'fifties Fokker used bonding in the F-27 Friendship, and around 1970 Lockheed bought a license from I think the Paton Institute to use a combination of bonding and spot welding that was used in the An-2 biplane.

Back on topic, there's a Dutch saying that can be translated as "It's better to turn back half way than to go wrong the whole way".
But indeed you often see the opposite.

You might read Spotwelding Magnesium, by Ed Bilitsky at weldingcanada.com for an excellent article on joining magnesium, aluminum, and titanium. I am rather certain that I read that the center fuselage or center section of the F-22 contained many weld in order to save weight and smooth the final joints in order to minimize the many tiny distortions from the proper shape when riveting, in addition riveting is not dependant on a thin layer of adhesive, the welded seam may be stronger than the parent materials. AFB

I honestly think you just like to see if I've done my homework?? Brat

It has been specifically engineered for internal carriage on the F-35A and F-35C variants of JSF to enable the aircraft to maintain its stealth characteristics.

-- High probability of penetrating air defense systems through a combination of capabilities such as low radar signature, super sea-skim, variable speed, range and high-g maneuvers;
-- Automated Target Recognition with Imaging target seeker for discrimination between red, white and blue ships.
-- Advanced engagement planning system which exploits the geography in the area of operations.
-- Target library including hit-point, fuze setting and optimal end-game.
-- A two-way networking data link will provide Target Update, Re-Targeting, Mission abort and Bomb Hit Indication (BHI)

AF-01 works her tail off doesn't she, it is only appropriate that she be the flag bearer for many of these flight tests and weapons checks, and the Edwards crew has been on top of a lot of these tests. I certainly have had my confidence level moved from a low D to an A- particularly as the A bird has completed the high alpha testing and intentional departures. With the Navy crew moving ahead on the East coast, I'm hoping we see some traps shortly.
