A number of people from particular political persuasions, from particular aircraft fan clubs, and from opposition forces love to hate and naysay the F-35.

Yet it continues right along, and is the already most tested aircraft program in history, and will be ultimately the most wide-spread, effective, all-round 5th generation aircraft produced.

I don't understand how you guys didn't understand the news. Dave Majumdar is saying the exact same thing as what the F-35 spokesman said, even though Dave is being a bit sensationalist.

Dave said the gun will be operational with Block 3F.
“There will be no gun until [the Joint Strike Fighter’s Block] 3F [software], there is no software to support it now or for the next four-ish years,” said one Air Force official affiliated with the F-35 program.

DellaVedova says the exact same thing.
"Delivering the gun capability in 3F software is well known to the military services, International Partners and our foreign military sales (FMS) customers," DellaVedova said. "That has always been the stated requirement and plan and it hasn't varied since the technical baseline review in 2010."

It is true that the gun is supposed to be ready with Block 3F. However what has changed is the new IOC schedule whereas the original schedule called for IOC of all variants with the Block 3F software. So the F-35 was supposed to have achieved its original IOC with an operational gun.

With the Marines willing to accept a Block 2F and the USAF a Block 3I for an early IOC, it means the gun won't be operational until 2018-19. Only the USN will accept a F-35C with an operational gun with the 3F software for IOC.

That was Dave's point. Operational fighters with non-operational gun.

here's what the Editor of GLOBAL AVIATION REPORT has to say about the statement of Mr. DellaVedova (which is linked in my post above):
What is most disturbing about this factually incorrect and misleading F-35 report is how so many hundreds (thousands?) of news outlets and blogs picked up on the story without checking any facts whatsoever. The red flag should gone up when the reporter did not name his sources. It certainly did here, and the story was not posted to this website. Editor’s comments on another story posted this editor’s thoughts (click

) about the reliability of the report in question.
The need by LM to refute this widely-dispersed “report” is proof of the following two things. One – today’s media is “hype”-driven and websites print stories without checking the facts (poison sells and most of the people forwarding these erroneous reports have no expertise or experience in/with military aviation whatsoever) and two – there is a concerted effort, whether by design or through negligence, to discredit this the world’s premier 5th gen stealth fighter-bomber. The Russians and Chinese would love to see the program killed. Ain’t gonna happen!

P.S. It's cool how the new button for quoting (Insert/Quote) keeps the original boldface, italics fonts and even the link inside of the quoted text.

The gun story is just a minor part of the whole issue. The key deliverable to the F-35 program is when Block 3F is met because that is when the main components come together like sensor fusion and situation awareness. The official timeline is questionable because there is already known slippage of approx. 13 months partly driven by the engine fire and continuing testing issues. It is also when all the major problems if they persist will come to a head and so will be all the integration issues with sensor fusion concerning process and function. Achieving IOC and having a platform being able to go to war are two very different milestone with the latter not until Block 3F.
