I find it interesting to see this where old cold war adversary equipment, now because of the break up, find common cause and fly together.
In the early to mid 1980s it would have been not only unheard of, but people would have laughed anyone to scorn who suggested such a thing.
Now here it is happening!
Yes one of those Air Force jockeys exchanged with an East German Pilot, and flew lots of missions in the Mig-29. Several years ago he flew "Red Airs" Mig-29UB, one of less than 1/2 dozen civilian Mig-29s in the US. He found the IRST to be virtually useless, though newer versions my actually be more effective. "Spanky" was his call sign, and I believe Tyler Rogaway had enterviewed him for his blog spot??
Anyway, he gave a very fair assessment of the Mig-29, which he enjoyed flying, but found it to be a lot of work as I recall, by the same token he stated that those people who claimed the F-15s greater than 1 to 1 thrust ratio would allow it to accelerate going straight up, were not being entirely truthful either?? LOL
"Red Air" has been renamed, and although they are still in business, I believe the Obama years have taken a tremendous toll on their operation, in fact all that's left of their once very substantial aircraft inventory here in central Obamastan? are the two Mig-29s on the ramp that are my avatar, and there were two fly-able at Quincy, Il. in a smaller hangar, I know at least one had been for sale?
