F-15 Eagle Thread

I'm a bit struck that after not having put IRST on any of the fighters directly, the US now seems to start sticking it to the nose of every pod, drop tank and so on they can find.

The way I understand this pod, it's basicly a wireless hub / gateway for comms on the battlefield. So one pod in an area should suffice? Plus spares of course. But at 1.800lbs extra I would tent to keep a 2-ship so equipped a bit further back. And then stick a Legion pod, Open pod or TIGER eye to the F-15Cs going in front. Although I don't actually know of those pods are really less heavy.

I would also guess (hope?) that such a gateway, due to it's nature, understands and speaks MADL.

According to the article will that mean the F-22 will be getting the same version as the F-15C/D or will it be stealth coated considering this isn't a drop tank like pod?
So big same size as a FT of 2000 l ! with electronic you don't drop it and even with coating compromise F-22 stealth, coating is not all by example F-15SE is not a real stealth fighter.

Put F-35 IRST on F-22 is the better solution.

As you said, the primary function is a gateway because if the plan is for the F-15C to be tasked with the F-22's they need to be able to talk to each other without compromising the F-22's presence. The Legion pod while offering similar IRST features do not have the translator. Logically MADL waveform translation should be within development scope but that is not obvious from the article and so that is an unknown at this stage.

for example "But for now, the most pressing need is to get the F-22 and the Air Force’s teen-series fighters, especially the F-15C/D fleet, on the same tactical page, and the Talon HATE pod hopes to do just that."

Has this been posted before?

Nothing give me more goosebumps than sound of turbofans and the sight of fast fighter jets. By the way, the F-15 seem kinda sluggish compared to the F-16. Is it due to the drop tanks?

Israel is going to upgrade it's 25 F-15I keeping those "strategic" aircraft in service in parallel to the F-35. There will be a new weapon system, an APG-82(V)1, new avionics and (I'm especially curious about those) structural changes.

Israel gives green light to F-15I upgrade

Israel will embark on a “deep” upgrade of its Boeing F-15I Ra’am fleet as it looks to maintain the type as the backbone of its air force’s strike capability, despite the parallel acquisition of the Lockheed Martin F-35.

The enhancement has been mooted for some time, but Tel Aviv has recently given the green light to the programme.

Modifications will include structural changes, the addition of an active electronically-scanned array (AESA) radar, updated avionics and new, unspecified weapon systems.

A selection process for the radar is ongoing, with a decision due mid-year. It is thought Israel favours the Raytheon APG-82(V)1 radar selected by the US Air Force for its F-15Es.

Lt Col Yiftach, head of the Israeli air force’s aircraft branch, told the service’s website, although some missions will eventually pass to the F-35, the Boeing type will remain a “strategic aircraft”.

"When we want to reach far distances with few aircraft and many arms – the F-15I wins,” he says, noting its “great carrying abilities”.

Yiftach says: "There is a reason it hasn't stopped flying and conducting missions after 18 years. As an aircraft that only operates with one squadron, it has every extreme ability we would want our aircraft to have.”

It will also take time to integrate weapons onto the F-35, says Yiftach.

Flightglobal’s Fleets Analyzer database records the service as operating 25 F-15Is, along with a combined 42 A/C-models.
