USAF allocates F-15C upgrade funds
The US Air Force (USAF) has committed financing to modernising aspects of its Boeing F-15C Eagle fighter fleet, while it retains plans to upgrade others once funds become available.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the 2016 Farnborough Airshow, the chief of the USAF's Air Combat Command (ACC), General Herbert Carlisle, said that, with the 1970s-era air superiority fighter set to remain in service "for decades", the USAF has committed funds to a wing refurbishment programme, as well as to retrofitting an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar.
"The F-15C will be around for decades, not years. We will re-wing a number, and integrate an AESA also….These have been budgeted," the general said.
Beyond the wings and radar, Gen Carlisle said that the USAF still harbours plans to equip at least a portion of its F-15Cs with the Eagle Passive Active Warning Survivability System (EPAWSS); advanced targeting pods; as well as modern avionics and weapons systems. As noted by the general, the aircraft's powerplant will not need upgrading.
The F-15 Eagle has been in service with the USAF for more than four decades, and with only about 200 operating alongside approximately 180 Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptors there is a near-term lack of pure air superiority aircraft capacity. While these enhancements might not address the numbers issue, they should at least ensure that those F-15Cs that do remain are at the forefront of capability.
