IOW, exactly what some of us were speculating about when seeing the F-15SA weapons load the Saudis have.

A couple of hundred of those updated F-15C2040s along with the 180+ F-22s, and then 1,700 F-35s should tie the US Air Fore over more than nicely until the 6th gen aircraft come out.

Adding to what Brumby and you brought up

Eurofighters are going to phase out Tornados.

Thanks, Forbin. You rock.

I forgot about that expensive upgrade...and you are exactly right.

So will the Eurofighters replace some of the older F-15s?
In fact have replaced a part of F-5 they are 120 but now used for training and soon retired Saudi AF want sale also.
I repeat only change after except F-15S modernised in F-15SA, new F-15SA replace C/D.

Boeing Co. has received a $4 billion contract from the U.S. Defense Department to upgrade the electronic warfare suite on the F-15 fighter jet, the company announced.

The world’s largest aerospace company announced it has tapped BAE Systems to develop the new threat detection system, known as the Eagle Passive Active Warning Survivability System, or EPAWSS, for about 400 U.S. Air Force F-15Cs and F-15Es.

The all-digital technology is designed to better counter threats and protect air crews for decades to come, and will replace the existing Tactical Electronic Warfare System, or TEWS, which has been in use since the 1980s.

“Warfighters of today and tomorrow need the latest in jamming, targeting, infrared threat detection and enhanced decoy capabilities,” Mike Gibbons, vice president, Global Strike Boeing F-15 programs, said in a press release. “EPAWSS will ensure the F-15 is relevant and dominant through 2040 and beyond.”

The new system requires a smaller footprint than the old one, providing advanced electronic warfare capabilities and a significant growth path for the F-15 Eagle, according to a separate statement from BAE. It will improve aircraft protection with advanced electronic countermeasures, radar warning, and increased chaff and flare capability; it will also meet future F-15 requirements, including the capability to detect and defeat threats in contested and highly contested environments, the release states.

“This selection builds on our extensive electronic warfare legacy, a history we were able to leverage to develop an executable, affordable, and low-risk solution for the F-15 fleet,” Brian Walters, vice president and general manager of Electronic Combat Solutions at BAE Systems, said in the release.

“By upgrading to an enhanced all-digital system, the Air Force, in conjunction with the platform prime, Boeing, will provide next-generation electronic warfare capability to F-15C and F-15E aircraft to help keep the platform capable and mission-ready against current and future threats.”

We need more....

Upgrading F-15 is certainly smart move, much smarter then spending money on F-35, yet is not enough . F-15 produced today would be certainly better in some aspects then F-35 (especially air-to-air) , yet significantly cheaper . But, as it is, those birds are getting old . Some were produced during 90's and they certainly could not be dominant up to 2040 . Accumulated flight hours, material fatigue and , to put it bluntly, obsolescence of some technologies , are taking their toll . They simply cannot keep up with newly built planes with larger percentage of composites, 3D printed parts , canards, thrust vectors etc ...

Come on Chief, quit beating on the ThunderHogge II, you never criticize PAK-FA, which is in a great deal more trouble than the F-35, there appears at present to be only 054 airworthy at present, the rest are under construction or in the shop??? 051 may have returned to flight??? but its hard to say, and you should realize that canards are simply the means control pitch on aircraft that are primarily aft mounted delta main wings, they are in no way superior to stabilators on more conventional aircraft.

Neither have the Chinese incorporated OVT on their J-20?? but the F-35A has been flown to 110 degrees positive angle of attack and recovered without incident, so your criticism is without merit, especially for the reasons you have stated??

Nor do you mention the archaic Air Forces of Russia and China, who are operating many much older airframes as frontline equipment, makes those F-15s look youthful by comparison?? LOL

Yes he remains very interesting with a AESA want easy the last Flanker except Su-35.
Normaly F-15C/D replaced by last F-35A and E by 6th generation fighter i think logic.

Obviously F-15C/D are not stealth the main difference but a Stealth fighter in Stealth configuration get a " small payload " max 2 t and they are not only missions vs big Anti air Defenses/fighters...

Personnaly i like the actual USN and RAAF choice with a mixed fleet of Hornet and Growlers you can use F-18 with a max load with AA defenses decreased or destroyed.

However F-35 no B get a more big range as F-16/F-18 2 variant about 20 %.
But inferior to F-15 logic less big ; F-35C get the same range as F-22 he carry a little more fuel with her large wings.
